I personally wouldn't use MODPlug. At least not for the final mixing. The problem is that MODPlug Tracker makes no serious attempt to copy the original trackers' sound. So for instance, if you create an .it file in MODPlug then play it back in Impulse Tracker, or something that properly plays an .it file, it'll sound wrong.
However, MODPlug can be good to do the majority of the work, then use a more compliant tracker to do the finishing touches.. or record it to an Ogg Vorbis sound file and use that.

Actually ModPlug has a great tracker playback engine, WinAMP and most other modern players don't. If you are that worried, then you can always use the .XM format.Chris wrote:I personally wouldn't use MODPlug. At least not for the final mixing. Possibly.. though I was more specificly referring to IT, of which it completely butchered the format. The low-pass resonant filter IT has is completely wrong in MODPlug, MODPlug also "adds" things to formats that were never in the original specs and hence won't let it play back properly in anything other than MODPlug or something that attempts to sound like MODPlug. Format hijacking on this level is pretty evil.Actually ModPlug has a great tracker playback engine
I still contend that the best thing to do is to do the final mixing in the original tracker, to force tracker playback engines to play them right, or to output to Vorbis so it'll always playback how you intend it.

i use Impulse tracker to track, and ModPlug to do anything Impulse Tracker can't. such as normalizing samples or hacking them up or whatever. and i use ModPlug to save in mp3 of course. the reason i like to do the bulk of tracking in Impulse is cause i find it much faster and more solid feeling than ModPlug. I don't like MP's style of entering stuff in patterns at all. Plus, Windows by its nature makes it really slow to get around, whereas in IT a quick press of the shortcut keys and zip! i've got a zillion samples loaded and i can switch back and forth between modes real quick.
of course Impulse isn't likely to work in XP. no, i'd say it wouldn't work at all. but, eh. that's why i keep 98.

It probably would with VDMSound. Haven't really tried it though. DOSBox (the emulator, not the command prompt in Windows) should work too.of course Impulse isn't likely to work in XP.
I emplore you.. save to .wav (or a high quality (256+ kbps) MP3) and convert to Vorbis. Vorbis compresses better and is completely unhindered by software patents.i use ModPlug to save in mp3

too much trouble. if i save in mp3 it means i'm either gonna upload it or just send it to somebody over msn. they don't need full quality for that. i keep all my serious stuff in .it and .wav format. i don't think i'd trust even the highest quality .ogg to be an original working copy.I emplore you.. save to .wav (or a high quality (256+ kbps) MP3) and convert to Vorbis. Most of the people out there are stupid people that don't know anything about computers. They don't know what's good and what's bad, and they think IE is the only internet browser out there.Graf Zahl wrote:That attitude is why these jerks will continue to make money off their idiotic patent. There is something better but everybody seems content to use the inferior format with all its problems.
