Small "Challenge": Brightness Megawad

Post by Caligari87 »

I've had this idea floating around in my head for quite some time now, and I think it's time to give it a try.

This is sort of like the 1024 megawad, or the 10-sectors contest. First, a little history on the idea: I hate dark maps with a passion. I hate having to turn up either the brightness (in GZDoom) or the gamma. It just pisses me off, especially when people think it's going to make the map scary. It doesn't. I just makes it annoying, in my eyes.

I know there's a lot of projects going on, but this is short, simple, and sweet, so hopefully this won't be too big a deal.

Here's the basic idea: The most atmospheric map you can make, while staying above 192 brightness. This doesn't mean it has to be a scare-em-up, just one that pulls the player in and makes them want to finish. The maps should be small and short, you shouldn't worry about detail too much, and they have to be a blast to play.

RULES:
  • ZDoom 2.0.98 (official) Compatable. No GZDoom or unofficial build.
  • No sector should go below 160 brightness.
  • Custom monsters allowed. No Stealth monsters.
  • Custom textures allowed, but keep it minimal.
  • 750 sector limit, detailing included.
  • Well-designed levels with proper texturing/construction are a must.
  • Well-balanced gameplay, preferably for all difficulty levels.
  • Simple scripting only.
  • Please strip the player's inventory for your level. Pistol starts only.
Spoiler: Use this ACS code for your pistol starts
SUBMISSION: You may enter as many times as you wish, but only two of your maps will be included. I will be judging and maintaining the WAD, anyone who wants to help can PM me. There will be a list of accepted maps in this post. The end of the "challenge" is March 20.

Have fun!

Should we submit maps as MAP01 or sign up for slots?

An interesting idea. Excessive darkness in maps has always irked (another good word) me too. 192 is very bright as a minimum though. Interesting.

Not sure if I'll be able to contribute. RL is always hectic for me at this time of year. However, I look forward to seeing what people do with it and, if I get a chance, I'll have a crack at it myself.

I'd set 160 as a minimum. That way you can have some shadowy areas.

This is a pretty good idea. I might actually try making a map for this.

I'd prefer 160 as minimum, and the possibility to use decorate monsters. I'm also not sure about the rules in some areas, particularly in the area of new textures/flats, but I don't think that's much of a problem.

I'm not sure if I'll have a go at this or not. Warpzone isn't all that far off of being finished and I think the water resource wad has been neglected for a bit too long now. :?

I'll make a map or two for this. I have a lot of time on my hands so they shouldn't take too long to make. I would also like to know if new textures are allowed because I am quite bored of the standard Doom 2 textures.

Meh, 31 days is too short for me considering that I'm already working on a different map. I'd almost consider making a map for this if it were not due until April 10 or so, seeing as that's right after Spring Break for me and I'd have an entire week to work on it. But I'm not sure I'd have enough time either way.

Sounds like an interesting contest though, I'd like to see who does the best in this.

Wasn't there a CVAR to set the minimum rendered brightness?

Don't think so.

But *ahem*, maybe there is a program to fix lighting in a .wad...?

Too much work. As soon as I find out how to work with .wad files in C#...

Well, I'll change the minimum brightness to 160. Don't worry about signing up for slots, I'll take care of it. Probably just order received.

Custom textures/monsters? Well, as long as it's not overboard, I guess. The main idea of the WAD is to keep it simple and small, so not too much, but I'll allow it.

Rule changes. Thanks to everyone who'd going to participate. :D

RULES EDITED! Hopefully we can get some more participation. Like I said before, it doesn't have to be big or glamourous, so just enter if you can.
