The 3 Pillars of Torches
Hello fellow doomers. Welcome to my first ever map.
Background:
Spoiler:Contents:
It started as a simple idea when I was doing a walkthrough on Doom 2. It took a couple of weeks since I had little time to play while juggling between daily routine and school. Once I did beat the game, I felt a sense of accomplishment and took a short break. While I was resting, I thought to myself, "How long can I survive the Icon of Sin without getting killed?". When it was time for me to test it myself, it was fun. I managed to last for a couple of minutes until I got telefragged. Which got me thinking again, "Are there any custom maps out there that simulate a survival game mode". I searched for a while but to no avail. It was pretty disappointing at first until it hit me, "If there aren't maps like this out there, maybe I can do it myself". So, it turned into another task I had to juggle but when it was finished, it wasn't half-bad. I playtested it for a while and it kinda emulates the feeling a bit. I'm hoping to further improve it soon.
Spoiler:Changelog:
Description:
The WAD file only modifies Map 01. Loading to a different map will just be a regular Doom 2 level.
It has 10 normal secrets and a "super" secret for you to discover.
The map also contains a "non-canon" ending. It can be accessible on both singleplayer and multiplayer but singleplayer is a bit forgiving. I added "a hell of a lot of" Cyberdemons in multiplayer because past me can't code a script that disables specific doors to reach the "non-canon" ending.
Goal:
I plan to establish a "lore" so there will be multiple endings but for now, dying will be the "Death for Glory Ending" and finding the secret within the super secret will be the "Non-Canon" ending. It will be explained was I establish a decent "lore".
Other things to mention:
Regarding to the skill level you've chosen, the number of Torches (Spawners) will be affected. On "I'm too young to die" and "Hey, not to rough", there will only be one of them. On "Hurt me plenty, there will be two. On "Ultra-Violence" and "Nightmare!", you'll face three of them. The issue that I have no clue on what to do is the respawning monsters thing from "Nightmare!" or the "-respawn" parameter. It's a double-edged sword because monsters respawn randomly which is good for variety but some monsters respawn somewhere I don't know and that might lead to some performance issues when played for a long time. I guess this is a problem that I can't fix until future me will do it somehow.
Spoiler:Future Plans:Clues on achieving the "Non-Canon" Ending:
- Update 0 [The Release]:
Update 1 [The DZ Feedback Update]:
- The map is now released and ready to be playtested by the public.
- Now supports eight-person multiplayer.
- The background music has been changed to Doom 1's E1M8 music, Sign of Evil.
- Added the triggers for the two secrets.
- Added a super secret. (It is recommended to bind "jump" because it's platforming)
- Expanded the arena to increase mobility and to decrease the chance of getting telefragged.
Update 2 [Ending? Update]:
- Updated the guns closet to have more ammo and equipments.
(Achieving the ending will show a brief message, it's supposed to be witty/satire but reading it again really lacks a taste in humor)
- Added a "Non-Canon" ending to the map.
- Added more secrets.
Spoiler:Update 2 PATCH:
You must obtain 3 skull keys scattered around the map.
Enter the super secret and find a secret within the super secret.
It looks like I found myself a bug in the scripts. I don't know if it's a typo or a worse version of witty/satire message but I fixed it though. You should replace the old file with this patched one.

I haven't touched this thing in a while now. Looks like I'm gonna have to redo this thing now that I have a fair time in my hands.
If you're wondering, Update 3 has been a bust. I lost all dedication on keeping this thing afloat because of the constant stress I'm in.
I do have some plans that could potentially make a dent in this.
1. Establishing a decent lore.
2. Reworking the entire map and adding a campaign.
3. Custom sprites.
4. Custom textures.
(I may add links to the outdated versions.)

I hope you have fun!
