Tested on g4.5pre-60-gf47055bca
Firing a weapon (or using the A_AlertMonsters function) normally alerts the monsters once.
However the alerting sound no longer seems to disappear and continues to alert monsters afterwards.
Don't really know how to explain it better, so this is how it can be executed:
- Go to a map with a lot of space. (Like Doom 2's MAP12)
- Summon a Spider Mastermind. (Because of the big hitbox that prevents accidental alerts by touching)
- Fire the pistol, which should alert the Mastermind, after which kill it by using the "mdk" console command.
- Summon another one.
The newly summon Spider Mastermind will also be alerted, without making any alert noise. (Like firing the pistol)
I don't recall this being the case before, so I'm reporting this as a bug here.
I also didn't find any similar post on the matter on the forums, so hopefully this isn't a duplicate.
Thank you.

Re: Alert sound lasting indefinitely
Are you by any chance using a compatibility preset? What you describe is the original alert behavior so the presets will use it.
Re: Alert sound lasting indefinitely
I apparently was.
I don't recall ever switching it on though.
I deeply apologize for the inconvenience.
