RIP GPU :(

Post by ibm5155 »

Just to not polute other threads, I'm gonna post all related stuff about my gpu here :B
So, Everything started with Qzdoom  , there were too many fps so I just lowered the clock to the minimun on msi after burner and ok, then I lowered the Power Limit bar to the lowest value and apply, then the mouse changed his position to the center of screen, and a second later the system froze (With that, neither the caps lock led wasnt changing when the key was pressed)....

And after that day, I couldn't use Windows anymore with that gpu enabled (Neither ubuntu O_o)...

I just wonder, how the heck did I F*** my own gpu by lowering the clock O_O, my last hope is that somehow I crewed the vbios :|

I don't have much to show, but here're some photos from ubuntu's booting
Spoiler:
Since There're some PCH warnings, it may be the GPU itself but the PCH that's causing all those errors?
And, is there a way to test the PCH and/or the GPU?

What about the other GPU in your computer? We still have one left to fry. ;)

Just kidding - sorry about your GPU. Only thing I can think of that could help would maybe be pulling out the battery so it is completely drained for power and hope that somehow resets it. If not, you probably have some dead chip or other component somewhere that will need to be replaced.

I believe it's easier to see north korea to win usa than trying to fry my intel gpu

You'd be amazed. I managed to get my Intel GPU to overheat on several occasions and I was not even doing much with it.

How does changing clock and power settings brick a GPU?? :?

Very easily. GPU's were simply not designed to have their clock and power settings changed except by very specific software (vendor drivers) and only under very specific circumstances.

Anything that is not specifically run in a way that's been tested and certified in a controlled environment runs outside the bounds of what a vendor can control - some hardware is made pretty well and can endure it, some is not, some are just made with shitty components to begin with and will immediately fry at the hint of a slight short or overcharge.

Unfortunately it's just the way it is. If you want to over/underclock always stay within specs. If a program warns you not to do it - then don't do it - simple as that. (Some exceptions can be made if you have advanced cooling systems or water cooling but even then it is still risky and you have to be careful)

Chances are your GPU was already on its way out, QZDoom or not. I don't see how blaming QZDoom is relevant to any of this.

I only used the same clocks allowed by the amd catalyst control center and about the Qzdoom, it's just the last software that card was running.

It could be, but it would be a shame to have a gpu that only died in 4 years, even when the temperatures aren't too high for a notebook.

It's not impossible that the GPU had a weakness that grew bigger over the years or something that could break with the right triggers. After all, heat is not the only thing that can kill a GPU.

Frying by over-underclocking is a real and documented thing. You, of all people that claim to know all about graphics and old hardware, should have known better about it.

To be honest I never knew an underclock could screw the gpu (even that the gpu lowers his own clock to the same level that I set )...

from the research that I did, the gpu may not be dead, but yes the BGA connectors may be bad, in that case a reballing should fix that, and the price is like U$90, but I still want to do some more search to find out if it's indeed the bga and not other thing

If it's not in warranty, oven it. Otherwise, you can probably get it replaced.

It's out of warranty and Samsung wanted me to pay U$800 for replacing the motherboard X__X ... (It's like 80% of the original price, and 2x the price of an used model rofl)

I wouldn't go that route just yet because your GPU could be just fine is just the timing is off on your computer.

Because the CPU/GPU and the motherboard has to work the same its like a balancing act they have to stay balanced with each other if not then its not going to fuction the correct way.
