ZDoom Graphic Flickering Issue
ZDoom Graphic Flickering Issue
Hey, guys, I have a big problem when trying to run ZDoom (latest win-64 version; I didn't change any setting or anything, just added the Doom 2 wad in the GZDoom installation directory).
The problem is that I basically get a lot of texture flickering that pretty much makes menu navigation and playing the game impossible. The main menu has text flickering that can barely make it readable.
Here is a screenshot:
https://postimg.org/image/u3ptgaznf/
As you can see, some of the text is missing (it was flickering between visible and invisible).
This goes on in-game, with textures flickering randomly between visible and invisible (again a screenshot - you can see some of the weapon numbers missing, the player portrait and some terrain textures off at the time the screenshot was taken):

My specs:
Processor: i5 intel core CPU 2.53GHz
Memory: 8GB RAM
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 5470 1GB
OS: Win 7 64-bit
Note that when fiddling around with things like game resolution, compatibility mode/run as admin and windowed mode/fullscreen the flickering pattern did alter or diminish, but I could never get rid of it entirely.
Also note that I could play the prepackaged Brutal Doom 20b: Hell on Earth Starter Pack - GZDoom with no problem at all.
Anyone could help? I can't find anything anywhere.
The only related issue I could find was this https://www.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/ ... th_gzdoom/ but I don't really get how to fix the problem (I suck at computers and all that stuff FYI).
Thanks in advance, I am pretty desperate to fix this problem as I wanted to get into modding and creating my own game using this engine.

Re: ZDoom Graphic Flickering Issue
It might have a problem rendering the textures.
Make sure its optimized to do that, or, if its the computer that cant handle the hardware, upgrade or use a better computer...

How can I make sure it's optimized?Goldenflare5643 wrote:It might have a problem rendering the textures.

Again, I have no problem with other source ports, like Zandronum or again, even GZDoom that came with Hell on Earth Starter Pack, so I'm not 100% sure it's my PC.

His post made no actual sense... so...Yuffa wrote:How can I make sure it's optimized?Goldenflare5643 wrote:It might have a problem rendering the textures.

Your video card has been knocked out into the "Legacy" category. Congratulations, I am sure you were excited to see this happen. (Not)
Try downloading the latest available driver for your GPU. Here is a link.
You have two choices: The latest driver, or the latest beta. I would try both until one works. Try 15.7.1 first, and then try the Crimson Edition 16.2.1 beta if that one doesn't work.
Re: ZDoom Graphic Flickering Issue
Tried to update my driver for a whole day, but every time I install 15.7.1 I get a black screen after the windows logo during start up. It seems to be related to my Asus (a billion of people have this problem) but obviously I couldn't find any fix whatsoever, although I tried a million things to get the bloody thing to work.Eruanna wrote:His post made no actual sense... so...Yuffa wrote:How can I make sure it's optimized?Goldenflare5643 wrote:It might have a problem rendering the textures.

Aparently, 13.4 was the last stable version, so I completely wiped out ATI from my PC and reinstalled from scratch to 13.4.
I was relieved to see that GZDoom doesn't have any more flickering problems.
HOWEVER
The music doesn't play anymore.
So yeah...
But thanks a lot for the assist.

Check your sound drivers, then...
From the sound of it, you have a Windows installation that's ... been around.
Like sex, part of everything that Windows has been with stays indefinitely with it. I am glad that reinstalling from scratch fixed the problem, but now you need your sound drivers again. Then you should be good.

Apparently ZDoom was using my headphones driver. Had to uninstall it and it seems to work now.Eruanna wrote:Check your sound drivers, then...

My Windows is licensed and it came along with the notebook from store so I'm not sure what you mean. As for viruses, I never really had any trouble with them, except for some adware.
But anyway, thanks a lot for the help, guess I finally got from -1 to 0 in terms of starting my modding career. And thanks to all you guys for investing yourselves in creating and maintaining this awesome engine.
Will probably make a handful more posts here since I'm not sure I'll be able to learn how to script like a guru, but at least I can make textures and sprites myself.
Cheers.

Actually... What I meant in lamen's terms was that its probably the computer, and that the software might be uneasy with running zdoom...Eruanna wrote:His post made no actual sense... so...Yuffa wrote:How can I make sure it's optimized?Goldenflare5643 wrote:It might have a problem rendering the textures.

Which you've already explained. Good job...

Basically, GzDoom needs at the very least OpenGL2.0, while 3.0 is best. Old GPUs don't support 3, some don't even support 2, and need to have GZD's 2.0 compatibility switch turned on to work properly (although some effects like shaders and such won't work.) If 2 isn't supported a newer GPU is required.

Re: ZDoom Graphic Flickering Issue
You basically just said that it was the computer, "Old GPUs don't support 3, some don't even support 2", thats really just a longer more complex way of saying, "Its the computer/GPU...". All she did is explain the more complex and 'to the point things' about the problem, the stuff about it I did not know. To be honest most of the time I have no clue what everyone is talking about, but this time, I did.Tapwave wrote:That... made even less sense.Goldenflare5643 wrote: Actually... Just an FYI, no offence...

Please stop using the bold/color tags. I'm tired of editing them all out.
