We definitely need more Lovecraftian mods.

Post by Freaklore1 »

I've been thinking lately that we definitely need more Lovecraftian mods or maps.

I myself am a fan of that author's work,i got 2 books with one being The shadow over Innsmouth and the other being At the mountains of madness wich actually consist of 6 stories (Dagon,The nameless city,Imprisoned with the pharaons,The call of Cthulhu,At the mountains of madness and The shadow out of time.).

I also have the game Call of Cthulhu:Dark corners of the Earth on my original Xbox, and i did played the 3 original Alone in the dark games + the 4th one on PS1.

I know that there are a fews mods and maps inspired by the mythologie of Cthulhu/Lovecraft,but there are not that many.

Anyone here also like H.P Lovecraft works ? Do you think there should be more mods/maps based on that intriguing and creepy universe ?

Share your toughts in this thread.

I think the biggest reason there aren't too many mods inspired by his work is because it would require a lot of resources to be created, namely of enemies.

Funny thing. Me and my brother are doing something like that on the low. We got started not long ago, but it's gonna take pretty long to release out first anything-related-to-it.

Not a bad idea. Recently, I read/watched Crouch End by Stephen King. It was truly a dark, eerie and yet enthralling story, revolving around the Cthulhu-mythos. The names appear on the street - "R'LYEH, YOGSOGGOTH, NYARLATHOTEP" - and the monster which eats the husband at the end is also quite reminescent.
The problem is, spriting these nasties is just as hard work as killing them (being immortal)...too bad, Crouch End would make an extremely good Doom 2 map.

Yeah i saw Strange Aeons,it's quite good.

But i definitely hope we get more stuffs inspired by H.P Lovecraft.

For resources, anyone can check out the first Alone in the dark since there is a lots of references to the Cthulhu mythos, there's also Call of Cthulhu Dark corners of the Earth on PC and the original Xbox wich is a video game version of the story The shadow over Innsmouth wich focus on the Deep ones and Dagon (half men half fish creatures),there's Eternal Darkness on the gamecube and of course there is also the 4 South Park episodes with Cthulhu.

There's also videos you can find of course that explain the mythos, here's one of them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob7PfxvJCN0

Well, as a matter of fact, Lovecraft will have a place in my project Doom Happens. One mini boss from the second map (not done yet) will be weakened lovecraftian deity based on ctuhlu. I say weakened as in not-insurpassable-chaotic-destrution-force strong, but still tough. Then there will be a brief moment in which you are teleported into a chaos dimension, and it will look ominous and trippy just for a few seconds, with titanic walls made of flesh and giant eyes and tentacles. It's not a lovecraftian mod, but it will have that small element to it xD

Thanks for the shoutouts, fellas. Wasn't sure if anyone had played my megawad.

I'd be pleased to see more mods based on classic horror authors. Back in the 90s I was really looking forward to Dracula Doom, and it broke my heart when it was canceled. I still can barely imagine what it would've been like.

It would definitely take a lot of work making resources for a Lovecraft-themed mod. There are some things on Realm667 that make pretty good substitutes, or serve well as the base for something else. There were things I wanted to put in Strange Aeons that I just couldn't work out, mainly in the graphics department, although sometimes Decorate would confound me now and then, too. It woulda been awesome to have an episode where friendly yithians back you up as you fight flying polyps and other creepy stuff. I had planned to put in mi-go or byakee or other flying critters, but it never worked out. It would've been cool to have cthonians, too, with a constant, eerie chanting following them everywhere they go underground. I considered doing that for the dholes and just making them a hybrid of the two, or doing it for a shudde-mell boss or something.

I also really wanted to have gugs as bosses in Episode 5, but I couldn't make a suitable sprite. Sigh...

Any Lovecraftian mod would definitely have to have some atmospheric aspects to it, whether it's an ambiance-heavy, action-minimal mod, or just a matter of throwing the player into totally alien environments.

I was playing this today after you mentioned it. I can't believe I never heard of this one. The cthulhu boss is pretty far out. My favorite is the submarine at the beginning, though.

True, when it come to ambiance the Chtulu mythos is definitely dark and mysterious.

Sometime i like to go on youtube and watch videos of the books/diaries that you can find in Alone in the Dark 1,just listening to them and picturing in my mind the stories told in thoses.

I think that it's an universe that definitely need to be looked more into when it comes to Doom mods/wads.

Those exemples of illustrations scream to be made by talented sprites designers and ooze of creativity.

I know that there are some doom wads out there that are inspired by the Chtulhu mythos but it seem that we barely scratched the surface of it.
