Windows 98 problems

Post by Lexus Alyus »

This could be Zdoom related... but it isn't :D.

In windows 98 you can usually press the file menu on any folder and select "new" to create new folders and all that other jazz... once apon a time you could do that with my windows 98... but not anymore... insted I have nothing like that... where as the ability to create new files gone? I want it back because I'm lost without it... somebody please tell me what I did wrong and how I can enable it again...

Now I will illustrate my problem. In the screenshot, notice that there are a lot of things missing... including "new". Where did they go? Why have they abondanoed me when I needed them the most?! Oh, please, can some kind soul save me from this hell that has befallen me? :D.

Thanks in advance by the way :).

"New" may have disappeared from the file menu, but I usually access the "new" option by right clicking somewhere in the folder where you want the new file to be (don't right click on a file, use the clear space between the files). This should also bring up a menu where "new" is one of the options. Has it gone from there too?

I miss 98.... And ME...

Do you have any windows tweaking programs? I'm sure i've seen an option on TweakXP which can disable it.

This is one time Lexus definatley isn't nuts I've had this problem before. And it is a PAIN in the ass because it is impossible to make a new directory with the GUI and you will have to use mkdir to make one.

It had me stumped as well. The only way I've been able to fix this problem is to re-install IE (the same version is OK).

This may be related to (re)installing (possibly uninstalling) nvidia drivers greater than 53.04, but I haven't spent the time to prove this. Good luck!

Try looking at this page:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/wi ... 1020449380

There may be something there to help you. The first few posts are nothing to do with your problem, but the second and third last seem to be.

Mmm... Im thinking that it might be since I installed FireFox. See, before hand I upgraded IE to version 6 or something, but wehen I installed irefox I just didn't need it, so I removed it. I'm thunking that M$, being that sly bastards they are, accidentilly (on purpose?) made it uninstall parts of the Windows interface, as explorereand IE pritty much are the same thing... that's my theory, in which case I'll have toi re-install IE... see what happens...

Thanks for the help so far though :).

Lexus: IE components and Explorer components now might as well be one and the same. That's why when you open up a folder you get an Address bar. :P

Uninstalling IE is never a good idea.

Nope. In Win. 98's Windows Explorer CTRL+N doens't really do anything. Yes it WOULD seem logical to have it do something like launch a new Explorer window or make a new file of a specified source or make a new folder or something like that, but it has been strangely left out.

I'll have to re-install IE and disable it as a browser then...

Thanks for the advise :).
