[Texture/Flat] FWATER replacement

Post by Enjay »

I found this in the Duke Nukem TC "Ages in Time" but I think that it may originally be from "Shadow Warrior". It's just a simple animated water flat set but I thought that it looked quite nice.

I extracted it from the TC and then recoloured it to use blues that are complimentary to the Doom palette. Note, it is not actually in the Doom palette but if you load it into the software engine, it converts pretty well. I left it in a non-Doom palette so that in GZDoom there is a little more subtlety to the colour gradients but both GZDoom and ZDoom look fine IMO. A minor limitation of it is that the animation has a definite direction of flow so it might not suit all maps.

Anyway, I packaged it up as a replacement to the default Doom FWATER so that it was nice and easy to have a look at in game. It can either be used as a replacement for FWATER or ranamed and used alongside it. Recolours could, of course, be made to match the other Doom liquids or whatever other colours were wanted.

Just load up the zip into (G)ZDoom without extracting the files.

It seems that there's a... "hiccup"? (don't know the right term for it) in the middle of the animation, like it suddenly "jumps" a bit. It's very noticeable in-game.

I know it's not your fault, but I thought I'd mention it.

Hmmm... so there is. I used all the frames that were in the TC but there was 15 of them. That struck me as an unusual number. (I would have expected 16.) I'll see if I can find my copy of Shadow Warrior and check the files.

[edit] Hmmm, well I now know that it is definitely from Shadow Warrior but there seems to only be 15 frames there too. :? [/edit]

Oh well, as compensation, here's another one. I really don't know where the original image came from. I think that it may have been a Google image search but it could also have been a caustics generator program that I have or a high res texture pack or even someone on here  . Please claim it if you recognise it. As before I have made it have colours that I think look OK alongside the Doom palette blues but it is not in the Doom palette. Again, I think it looks fine in GZDoom and reasonably OK in the software engine. It's a 128x128 texture. I think it looks better at its original resolution rather than scaling it down to be a hi-res image.

Again, just load the zip.

How's this? (Linkety-link-link)

Edit: Oh, and if anyone's interested, I can easily recolor it to fit most palettes. (Or hell, just quickly recoloring it to whatever.)

That looks pretty neat. I have to say though that there is such contrast between the thin highlights and the larger background colour areas that it looks more like some kind of stringy plasma to me (especially with some of the bright colours in the alternative image). Not that it's a problem. A stringy plasma texture is just as welcome as a water one. :D

What did you use to make this? Genetica?

Yeah Blox the latest version looks much better. The first one you did looks too... erhh, "electric-y".

Yesh :) if you enforce bright colours, it does look like electricity or wormhole "wall". Especially if you remove the black background.

Actually, a transparent version would be really cool to use as a force field or something.

To make them more similar to the Doom water, you should skew it by 45 degrees to the left.

I for one would like to see re-colours of this one...
