ZDoom does a lot more than let you run in XP and use a mouse. =)

And yes, it's a beta of 2.0. 2.0.63a beta, or something of the like.

In the same folder as your WADs.

No, don't do that! That's messy. Make a new folder called Zdoom and put the Zdoom files in there. Then you need to copy your Doom2.wad into that directory. If you want to play plutonia, Ultimate Doom, TNT, Heretic, Hexen or Strife just copy all of those wads into the Zdoom directory, then on start up it will ask you which game you want to play. If you then want to play some custom PWADS, extract those into the Zdoom directory and just drag the wad file over Zdoom.exe and select the right IWAD to play with if it prompts (if it doesn't prompt, don't worry, this means your only using one Iwad). dead easy, that's all you'll ever need to know, until you start editing ;).

If mess is your concern, and you want to save disk space, AND you're using the NTFS filesystem, why not make hardlinks instead of copying the IWADs? Use something like Hardlink Magic (I forget the URL) to make nifty *nix-style links in your ZDoom folder to the IWAD files. Works just like a copy, but doesn't use up the extra 40-odd megs of space. This is actually what I did, since I've got the IWADs in one location but PrBoom, Legacy, ZDoom, and EDGE all in their own folders.

As has been mentioned before, if you just include a path in the .ini file, zdoom will go looking for the IWADS..... Just edit the ini setting for [IWADSearch.Directories]
It's right at the top, it should be something like:

Code: Select all

[IWADSearch.Directories]
Path=E:\blahblahblah\this_is_where_my_wads_are\
Path=$DOOMWADDIR
Path=$HOME
Path=$PROGDIR
I'm pretty sure you can have multiple paths and it'll search one then the next, then the next until it finds what it's looking for (but I've no need for that, so I've never tried it).

Also if you'd like to play online... download ZDaemon. It's pretty much the same thing as ZDoom, but for multiplayer games. You can play deathmatch, capture the flag, team deathmatch and Co-Op.

Lexus, Anonone, you're both wrong. Batch files are the way to go. Ultimate neatless + Ultimate ease and space-saving. Just stick each executable and support files in their own folder along with batch files pointing them at the right IWAD. No Windows required. Of course if you weren't born in MS-DOS like me, this might actually be more difficult for you -- and I would call you a pansy.

o/~ you are wrong, fucked and overrated etc o/~

I used to use a launcher which spat out .bat-s, I used to make the .bat-s myself before that. Now I just drop the pwads on the .exe. There is no BEST way. So hush! :)
