Why is there no autosaving in ZDOOM?
Why is there no autosaving in ZDOOM?
Yesterday I had been playing for over an hour without saving, and then I died. Is it MY fault for not saving?!
Didn't think so!
It's that stupid ZDOOM that is to blame! Whenever I become too immersed in a game I forget to save and I have to do large parts over again. I demand this to be changed immidiatly!

Actually auto save is in ZDoom, but the level author needs to script it manually.

1) Autosave IS in ZDoomBlueStar wrote:Yesterday I had been playing for over an hour without saving, and then I died. Is it MY fault for not saving?!

2) It occures at the beginning of a map or when the mapper tells it to occur
3) Yes, it is your fault you didn't save
4) demanding is frowned upon
5) It's stupid that you're blaming ZDoom when it's obviously your fault
6) STFU
There should be a new command: quicksave_quiet
This would act exactly like quicksave except it'll only show the "Are you sure you want to overwrite the quicksave named 'x'?" message once, so you can set up an alias like this:and not have it ask you to overwrite the quicksave every 2 minutes.

You're demanding that I don't demand anything?! #&%# hypocrite! Look who's demanding now. That's right, it's you!giest118 wrote:1) Autosave IS in ZDoomBlueStar wrote:Yesterday I had been playing for over an hour without saving, and then I died. Is it MY fault for not saving?!

You know, I didn't come here to be flamed like that. Maybe you could just shut up and let the serious people here answer instead. I can't believe I have to tolerate this...
And you're calling it MY fault for not saving. Didn't you read my original post? It's obviously NOT my fault!
Read the documentation (aka, the Wiki)? Just a suggestion...BlueStar wrote:Ok, maybe it autosaves for you. But how the %¤#&¤& was I supposed to know that? It's not like anyone told me.
PS: You can't expect to yell like that and not get flamed. I know this from personal experience.
EDIT: And I didn't 'demand' that you stop demanding... I was saying that demanding is frowned upon. And saying 'STFU' is telling you to shut up, not stop demanding.

As has been said, Zdoom does autosave. Every time you go from one level to the next your game is saved. So the farthest you will ever be sent back is to the autosave at the start of the level. This is better than the original doom which did not autosave at all. When you died you got sent back to the start of the level with the basic starting inventory - 100% health, 50 bullets a pistol and your fists.
The original levels do not have any kind of auto saving built into them, nor do most user made levels. However, it is possible for people to do this in their add on Zdoom levels and some people do release levels that autosave before a boss battle or similar.
How should Zdoom know when to autosave if it is not built into the levels? Every 5 minutes and run the risk of autosaving right at the point where you are on 1% health and a firball is incoming? No, autosave is available but only if authors include it. Given that many, many levels were made years before Zdoom had autosaving your just gonna have to live with the fact that you have to save the game yourself.
Zdoom has a quick save option. Hit F6, pick the savegame you want to use and then use F6 for any subsequent saves. Although, as Destroyer points out, you still always get asked to confirm you want to save.
Bottom line - is it your fault that you didn't save? Ummmm, well yes of course it is. It isn't my fault, or anyone elses that you decided to play a game and that you assumed it would autosave for you. It was your assumption and it was you who didn't find out what it did before playing. Therefore it was your fault. This is a classic bit of blame culture going on here. You played a game, you didnt bother to find out how it worked, you made an assumption, you got killed in the game and get sent back farther than you wanted to and you think it must be somebody elses fault. I bet you microwave your dog to dry it and go through to the back of your Winnebago Warrior for a snooze, leaving it on cruise control and then blame the manufacturers when it all goes horribly wrong too. (These and other urban myths are brought to you by Enjay Broadcasting Services.)
I'm not sure what games you are used to playing, but I still use savegames all the time in the games I play. It's clear the you want a modern game, rather than Zdoom, but even many modern games either do not autosave or do not autosave frequently enough, or in convenient places for me. I never assume that a game will autosave in a place that suits me and I make my own saves (providing it is possible to do so). I make the decision to do that. You don't. That's your problem and the consequences are your fault.

OK, I'm a serious person. It is stupid to barge into a board and demand shit when you have no clue and don't even bother to use the logic gland. "Wait, where did that virus come from? WTF, I thought the computer was supposed to clean stuff automatically!" Furthermore, you don't have to tolerate anything, we are the ones who have to tolerate people like yourself. Yeah. Dumbass.BlueStar wrote:Maybe you could just shut up and let the serious people here answer instead. I can't believe I have to tolerate this...
HotWax, your turn.
EDIT: Dammit already beat me to it, and I said "dumbass" before you even posted.
Whoa, was it me who just said that?
