The sprite itself might be 56 pixels, but in game it should appear more like 67.2 pixels if you convert Doom's rectangular pixels back into square ones. ;)

According to the Doom Metrics guide written by Scott Amspoker, it is reasonable to consider 10 vertical units, or 16 horizontal units, as one foot each. So the marine is 5' 7.2" tall. He always walks hunched however, that's why equal monsters seem taller (or the perspective is modified to make it look like a child is the hero).

Most of the people I have seen talking about scales in Doom (when not taking the Doom metrics guide as a reference) assume that the Doomguy is 6' tall and take all the calculations from there.

Either way, for our beefcake marine to be only 5'7" seems a bit short and even 6' isn't exactly a giant by today's standards. What's more, his eye height is 41 units putting them somewhere in his chest.

With all that silliness and a start to crate time of 0, I have decided that Doom must be a bit crap.

6 feet sounds about right. I needed to scale him for DE's title pic (will be done whenever I learn how to color digitially. :( )

I curse you! Whenever you go use a public restroom, there shall be no toilet paper, and you will be forced to use the pages from the Sears catalog.

A beefcake doesn't have to be tall. I've met quite a few short people that had lots of muscle, looking squarish overall. Also, 6' is actually okay, it's even above average in some areas,

True, I just like to imagine the Doomguy as having a bit of height as well as big muscles. However, the style of Doom sprites does make him a bit squat/square.

Again, true. However, I have noticed that (around here at least) even in a relatively short period of time people do seem to be getting taller. When I was a kid, people used to talk about six footers as something special. A person who was 6' tall was noted as being well above average height. However, at 6'2" myself and with a number of friends, colleagues and students matching or surpassing my height, it doesn't seem so special any more. :? So, who knows what will be considered tall by the time the Doomguy is running around on Phobos? ;)

But, yeah, a big, burly wide but also 6' tall frame does seem about right for the Doomguy sprite as he is drawn.

Birthday cakes and wedding cakes are typically taller.

Looking at the original Doom's poster, Doomguy's proportions look like he has significant height. Especially the guy running after him.

I'd understand this thread if you were using the metric system. -_-

I thought the answer was in this topic. Sadly, the videos were deleted.
