Monster walks on zdoom bridge?

Post by ColdRock »

I would like to know is it possible to make monster walk normal on ZDOOM bridges?

Thanx

You know, that's a very interesting question. I would assume they would be capable, but their AI will never let them do it because it is not an actual solid part of the level's geometry. If you set the monster's "walks off of cliffs" bit to on in dehacked he might come straight for you, and he might incidentally end up walking on a faked bridge to get to you, but he could just as easily fall off (and I fear that somehow that will cause catastrophic AI issues and crashes).

This could be a very, VERY interesting topic.

I think Randy has added some code that allows monsters to walk over bridges but I've never tested it myself.

I used the bridge.wad in the zdoom tutorials to place an imp on the opposite site of the bridge. The imp refuses to set foot on the bridge.

What if you place it directly above the bridge, so it falls onto it? It would, I think, happily walk around on it, though it would probably have no reservations aboput jumping off, unless you placed monster block lines on the sides of it.

The imp get stuck on the bridge and won't move at all. If you shoot it it slides back a bit but is still stuck. If you shoot it off the bridge it starts moving as normal, but still won't go on the bridge.

The Thing needs a bit set that tells them they can stand on other Things. Except that Randy supposedly made bridges a special case... but apparently not. :?

Wish they would. I use many of bridge things (either on bridges or
fake floors) but I've never seen a monsters walk over.
If used on a long floor with another floor crossing below the monsters stop chasing you and you can kill them w/o problems because they can't
come closer. :((

I don't have any experience with bridge things, but keep in mind that (non-floating) monsters will not cross a 25+ unit deep gap even if it is only 1 unit wide. I assume that if your bridge things are even 1 unit apart, you'd run into the same issue. The player may never notice it because he'll run right over 32-wide gaps without falling through.

Because I had never even given thought to how monsters might interact with faked bridges.

Can't actually check Randy's zip/wad ATM, but I assume it shows that monsters can walk on Zdoom 3D bridges. This didn't used to be the case, but it changed quite recently. I *think* the top of the bridge thing has to perfectly match the height of the nearby sector that the monster is walking off of, but that could just be a brain fart on my behalf.
