Better-looking minigun HUD sprites?

Post by Nash »

Does anyone know where I can find a good looking set of minigun HUD sprites? I don't like the usual Doom 3 one that gets used so often...

EDIT: Random screenshot to perk everyone's interest (and also to show the minigun sprite I do NOT want to use)

I made modified mini-gun sprites a while back. I took the chain-saw graphics and merged them with the original mini-gun. I noticed that someone did a similar thing in skulltag, only resized (which I thought looked a bit crap as it got pixelated). I kept the sizes the same but made the chain-gun barrel black (makes it look meaner :D). I also added a more realistic firing frame (I can't remember where I got that from...). I'll be using the sprites in my own projects but you can have a look and use them if you're interested.

I'll post them up at some point... I can't do it now because I'm in OS X right now and can't be arsed to reboot into Windows (I've disabled the internet in XP because I can't be arsed with anti virus programs :D).

Ceeb - It may not be an unaltered Doom 3 screen grab per se, but I believe the sprites are from an EDGE mod that attempted to recreate the Doom 3 weapons in Doom 2.

Lex - I don't like ST's minigun sprites either... plus it wouldn't fit the bill anyway because I want all of my weapons in this mod to be angled.

Note: Angled minigun sprites only please. :D

The one in Bittersweet does look nice. Any other options?

Paul's chaingun looks pretty good in my opinion, and it's centered too if that's your thing. I don't seem to have a link on hand at the moment...but I know for sure I used a modified version of it for wwhc-di (courtesy of Snarboo).

I would've chosen the sprites from wwhc-di if I didn't want angled-only weapons. :(

Oh well looks like I'll have to model a new one on my own... the modeling part isn't the problem... it's rendering them to look like it's hand-sprited that's difficult because I suck at materials.

(the problem I have with pre-rendered art is the fact that they look very clean and amateur-ish because I don't know how to setup good lighting and materials to make them look photorealistic)

Stuff like this needs a good UV map to make it not look like this. I suck at textures too. Maybe if you model it, you could ask someone to texture it for you?

If Cyb would release Void2, I drew a neat gatling gun people could use.

No, it's not... the effects in that screen are exclusive to that particular mod (which is a zombie survival thing).

The ironic thing is that I only spent like 20 minutes on it and it looks so damn good... tons better than nashgore does, which I spent many months to tweak. I wish I knew how to record videos so you can see it in motion.

I will not incorporate it into nashgore though. As I said, it's exclusive to the mod pictured.

I use FRAPS. There is a trial version that puts a logo on screen IIRC an the length of the video is limited (again IIRC) but it works well enough.

FRAPS will limit video recordings to 30 seconds consecutively. That's not really a problem if all you want is a highlights reel; then you can just use Windows Movie Maker to stitch them together.
