PC Speaker SFX

Post by Matthias »

I remember back in the old days playing Doom on a 386, Doom originally had the option of playing sounds through the PC speaker, back when sound cards were still something of a luxury. I look back on those primitive sound effects with some fondness.

Is there any way to reenable those PC speaker sound effects in ZDoom?

As far as I'm aware, none of the active ports support PC Speaker sound.
Chocolate-Doom is the only one which shows any sign of supporting it.

The format has only been fully reverse-engineered recently. I'd give the ports that are intrested in it time to implement it.

Why do I find this so awesome? Hehe, I love the old-style PC Speaker effects for some reason. Haha, I'm somewhat interested in Chocolate Doom now, thanks to this. Woohoo, gimmicks!

That's how I used to play Doom v1.2 (?) on the 386 at work. No sound card, that came later. I used to go to work on the weekends just to play that. :)

Similar but different to my experience. I had a sound card at home but went to work at the weekends to take advantage of the ipx network and the brave new world that was deathmatching - but had to put up with the bleeps and bloops of speaker sounds.
