I love ROTT. My brother was crazy about it and was fairly involved in the (very!) small community a few years back. That got me into it too. It's an unabashed silly game with tons of charm.

I even like the fact that it still uses 90 degree walls. It makes building levels quick and easy - like building with Lego.

The music is excellent. I much prefer it over the PC Doom music.

The graphics are nice and I really like the palette. The only thing I would've liked is a little more variation in the looks of the enemies. They all look a bit too similar from a distance. Stronger physical identities would make a big difference...

I really wish there was a stable and maintained source port and editor. The game needs more love... :)

Yeah I always wished for a chocolate-rott kind of thing. There just wasn't interest because WinROTT exists and is somehow canonical despite having a huge amount of misinforming issues like the screen aspect totally fucking up? And even worse... GPL violating closed sourcedness for latest releases?

but since most of rott's modern fanbase probably grew up on winrott first and love the crappy reboot, this might never be accomplished, and even then it'll still be pushed aside for WinROTT because of the same cruft-loving reasons. kinda like when doom2 became a "required brutaldoom component" instead of a game on its own in recent years

You get infinite bullets, which is overbalanced to the point of uselessness. Also silly how you have a slot for each, and you'll never have reason to roll back unless one of the blitz guards swipes your MP40.

I like that enemies are slow, makes it worthwhile to use missile weapons on them. Would still prefer if you could carry 2 or 3 at a time, and there were a "swap weapon" button to use.

Good ol' buggy WinROTT. Likes to "hang" after bosses (still playing music but not proceeding). I did kind of like the GL port's 3D model GADs, but not worth the other problems. Freelook is not very smooth at all. Nevermind trying to use the map randomizer, it always crashed on me.

At least the Win32 port of Ken's Labyrinth was pretty good. :P

I was just wondering about something if The Return of the triad the new ROTT would it have doom monsters in the levels too because it could be more challenging and it would be more better.

I was thinking when i get my new laptop computer or refix my old Win7 computer. I was planning on making new ROTT levels and adding in some doom characters with the old ROTT enemies & plus the weapons, items, power ups, etc... but can't do it without a laptop.

i should play Return sometime. i don't think i played much of it because it came with its own executable and it just felt weird and clunky to use. i suppose it can be run like any PWAD with Doom now?

Actually, Return of the Triad's pk3 can be run as a standalone iwad these days. It doesn't really depend on any iWAD as all the resources are provided anyway.

That's good to know that Return of the Triad is now considered an IWAD. You never know, one day there could even be a community project or something. Personally, I'd love to see that!

Slight tangent: What do you guys think of ROTT 2013 now that the dust has settled and the game's a little more playable? I've been playing it again for the past couple of days and I'm quite enjoying it though it's still glitchy as hell! Personally, I consider it a 'nearly' game. It got so close to being great but the unstable launch and the continued glitchy behaviour just holds it back from living up to it's daddy... It's kinda like a cheap B movie - a bit rubbish but has its charms... :)

I think the only reason it's allowed to be an IWAD because it contains all the necessary resources.

I see the ROTT remake the same as the original ROTT, they're both slightly behind the times and have a bit of cheap stuff to them but they're still a blast to play! :D

I got a good question to ask you guy?
Return of the triad is a zdoom engine is it possible that you can summon a doom character, weapons, or items?

I got one more question to ask? How many people here in zdoom forum had played all the Rise of the Triad games?

You 'can' summon doom objects, but you'd require the relevant IWAD to be loaded too.
It's not recommended though as the palette of the object will be completely screwed up as Return of the Triad uses a completely different one.

I played Return of the triad and it was excellent to play the items, power ups, monsters, music, and sound are just like the old 1995 ROTT but without the 90°angles. It did try to summon some characters from doom and they do spawn but i couldn't add in any custome made monsters in Return of the triad.
Is there a way to put in any custome made monsters in the return?

Basically that. It's cheap, but worth it.
Good for casual replayability, though.

It's playable, not too bad, but...

I bought it when it launches and disappointed so hard ...cannot even complete the game once(re-trying multiple times but always give up again)...stupid instant-kill traps in a game with checkpoint save system and saving glitches with pointless punishments after added saving feature to the game, guess because it's named RotT and I can't throw all my stupid memories from RotT 1995 away when I play RotT 2013, it sucks. :|
