Yep, he's been a lawyer. Then he was a musician. And now he's knee-deep in chickens. TNT Map 05 music sounds a lot like the one from this video.

The likelihood that Robert Prince had ever heard Devil Doll at the time is effectively zero. The albums sold in literally double-digit numbers (strictly limited by Mr. Doctor himself), and extremely obscure before the advent of the internet. Not to mention the figure quoted is an incredibly pentatonic scale run any beginning musician could have come up with.

Not Robert Prince, id gave him a load of metal CDs and basically said "we want this in our game", he himself is not really a fan of heavy metal.Woolie Wool wrote:The likelihood that Robert Prince had ever heard Devil Doll at the time is effectively zero. I still think a good chunk of E1M4 is closer to Superconductor though:
and E1M1 (of which, with respect, I hear nothing of Painkiller):
And with that I gotta say that quite a few of these involve some very common motifs...

who said E1M1 sounds like painkiller? but yes, that rush song is a dead ringer for E1M4, probably as much as the pantera one.Vaecrius wrote:omg e2m6how did i never notice this

on another note, listening to all these tracks and playing through the levels again I must admit Doom completely kills Doom2 in terms of level design, the first episode is an absolute classic, I think its still my fave stock doom episode, in contrast Doom2's levels are pretty poor in comparason, from about MAP11 till MAP20 I honestly cant remember many standout levels except maybe Suburbs which is REDICULOUSLY hard for the level, honestly, its the hardest level in the game IMO (well maybe after MAP10, talk about a difficulty hike!).

For Blake Stone, he wrote the best legal Immigrant Song ever by mixing it with Let it Ride.Kinsie wrote:I vaguely recall someone connected to Doom's development (Romero?) saying that Prince had a previous career as a lawyer, so when Id asked him to basically cover a bunch of metal songs, he knew exactly how much he could get away with.

Re: Doom riff ripoffs
There are a bunch of obvious covers in Doom, but a lot of these claims are seriously a stretch. One such egregious comparison is "Message For The Archvile" -- the similarity between the Slayer guitar part with the D_MESSAG bassline is practically nonexistent, and even if that much could be proven, the entire rest of the song is original and pretty involved. The King Crimson comparison for D_DM2INT is the same way: it finds the barest possible similarity in... I guess, rhythm (and to be honest I can't even slightly hear where this one is coming from), and completely ignores that 99% of the song bears no likeness to it whatsoever.

I was going off the Doom Wiki to make up the rest of theseesselfortium wrote:There are a bunch of obvious covers in Doom, but a lot of these claims are seriously a stretch. Re: Doom riff ripoffs
Its kinda sad that my favorite doom tunes are not totally original. I'm not against the idea of using mainstream metal as a base, but I believe a game should have its own unique theme and tune to it
Re: Doom riff ripoffs
Many, many tunes are not totally original. Even the consciously original ones can't help but be influenced by what the composer has heard before.

80's metal...
