See? Yet more reasons I shouldnt upgrade. Windows 98 doesnt have anything near the virus/security problems XP has. So it crashes more often. I can deal with that. What I can't deal with is bad OS design that results in millions upon millions of backwards compatibility and security problems.
But, to be honest, I just don't get this whole security thing. What kind of moronic OS is designed in such a way that it even needs a firewall? It's like they built a big wide open hole with a large neon sign that said "this way" and then decided to force users to cover it up with flimsy wooden boards if they wanted to protect themselves. Every time I hear about another exploit in windows it sounds like something Microsoft put in so they could hack into your computer themselves. What I should do is get a good virtual machine program and use that for all my internet access. Never mind that that's basically how internet access should work in the first place. Whos smart idea was it to give people on the internet access to your machine in any way shape or form anyway? Whatever happened to the good old BBS days when you had a terminal program that shared information with another terminal program. I would like to see a BBS user hack your computer. So whats wrong with that system? The internet sends you information, a program picks it up and displays whatever. Simple right? And it would have continued on that path too if Microsoft or whoever hadnt decided that all computers need to be servers or some such crap. No. I want my computer to function as a terminal only when it comes to the internet. It can send and receive things, but at no point should anything on it EVER be operated remotely. Is that too much to ask?
You know not to long ago I thought the idea of viruses that magically infect things just by being connected to it was complete bullshit. Now they appear to be everywhere. And it's not that viruses have gotten any more clever, it's just that they have been taking advantage of more and more stupidity.

Really? Because I don't. After disabling the few annoying dialogs that SP2 introduces, I can't see much difference between now and using SP1. Except that I have access to all the latest updates, of course.giest118 wrote:If you have Service Pack 2 installed, then I know what your problem is...Nems wrote:Windows XP

Actually, I HAVE been getting ads, spyware, and 1 annoing virus that hijacked my internet explorer (any website I opened would load for half a second and then close) without being on the internet...Nems wrote:Nope. I bought my copy of Webroot Spy Sweeper. When I turn it off as well as Norton, the lag isn't there and it runs smooth. Again, it has to do with my paranoia of catching another virus as to why I don't turn it off. I'm on a 2-way LAN conncetion that's connected to the internet all the time and, being a n00b when it comes to computers and the internet, I think I can still pick something up without actually surfing the 'net and playing ZDoom. Yes, it sounds silly, but after spending a total of a little over $700 on repairs because of viruses, I think you would be, too.Piezo wrote:I just looked up the Rogue Anti-malware List and it lists Webroot Spyware Sweeper as legitimate but under rogue/suspect anti-spyware products it reads:
Freeze.com AntiSpyware freeze.com company is known adware distributor (1); questionable license terms, demands personal info, provides outdated trial version of Webroot Spy Sweeper (1) [A: 9-15-04 / U: 9-15-04]
Anyway hopefully you didn't download your program from that site. The lag you are experiencing every once in a while was something that plagued my old computer and it turned out it was changing it's schedule to download from Windows Update. I recommend you check to see if that's the culprit, though probably not.![]()
Anywho, next time I may try unplugging my connection and turning off my anti-virus and anti-spyware programs to double-check and see how well it runs.

OMG LIEK GET FIREFOX NOW!!!1
Anywho, I tried disconnecting my LAN and disabling my anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and it worked just fine. I got absolutely no lag.

Just the other day I contracted a virus through firefox. I won't say what I was doing at the time (heh), but it took me a good few hours to recover. I remember it had something to do with Java, or at least the virus was found in my Java directory.
Btw, I run ZDoom at 1024 x 768 and I get no less than 60 FPS, no greater than 100. And when running in 640 x 480 on low detail, I get 258 FPS :O!
I have a 1.7 ghz celeron, 512 mb ram, and a radeon 9200 (128 mb).
EDIT: Here's one in 320x200 on low detail:

Wow, lots of responses.
Hmm... I find it very strange that noone else has run into this problem except for the guy that said he got 10fps on a celeron 800. (sounds like its related) So I guess "infamous" wasnt the best word.
Perhaps some screenshots are in order.
I currently have access to 2 machines with this problem and they have almost nothing in common other than an amd cpu. Ill take some screens when I get home and post them here.
Also, did you all try a RESIZED window? I can usualy run windowed without resizing and get acceptable framerates on a machine with this problem.
Someone suggested it could be fighting for cpu time with other software or something to that effect, this is not the case. I checked my framerates before I installed any software because that was my reason for changing operating systems.

Like I said, I have serious problems with ZDoom on this computer (has a dual montior setup), yet my other computer (only one monitor) plays it perfectly fine.Toke wrote:Hmm...
