Replacing lines for "Other" gender

Replacing lines for "Other" gender
"Itself" is kind of far fetched. How about "themselves"? Unless you patched up some cybernetic sprites and are roleplaying as a robot.
Otherwise, a gender named among the lines of "unknown" can work aswell.

Re: Replacing lines for "Other" gender
Problem is, the current way the obituaries are written simply repurposes the "him/her/it" identifier:
And there are years' worth of mods that use that scheme.
I seem to recall that the "Other" gender used to be labeled "Cyborg" instead; this could be considered a holdover from that.
Code: Select all
"%o killed %hself."

Re: Replacing lines for "Other" gender
Ah, crap.
Well, then another gender could be the better option, but I don't actually see the value in it. I think replacing the obituaries for Other seems a much better solution, but I have to factor in what you said...
"Themselves" versus "itself". That's a dramatic change, actually.

Should singular they results in "themself"?

Yeah, that was something copied from Quake II, just like the original zvox.wad.wildweasel wrote:I seem to recall that the "Other" gender used to be labeled "Cyborg" instead; this could be considered a holdover from that.

Itself and themself are both pronouns.. However, the definition is different. But I'm fine with "itself" over "themself".

Oxford's dictionary has it. Webster however does not.
Re: Replacing lines for "Other" gender
I suppose it's a logical word, but then I wonder why nobody says it.

Webster drops words if they're never used in daily life, where as Oxford would keep it.

Themself or hirself. Either has my vote.
"It" is insulting and makes me think of Buffalo Bill.

"Themself" is actually the opposite, i.e. it's a word that has only recently begun to be used.Hellser wrote:Webster drops words if they're never used in daily life, where as Oxford would keep it.

I have to agree that "it/itself" etc. is insulting

Re: Replacing lines for "Other" gender
As I said before, I don't mind it. Don't see how it is insulting, personally.
