And if you're worried about Steam tracking your game hours, I'm pretty sure it'll still track those for non-Steam games. Screenshots taken using the Overlay can still be uploaded to Steam Community, and I can see no downside to doing it the "right" way.
Re: ZDoom with mods AND Steam Overlay?
Further more, doing it properly means you can add tile images to your mods. Like so:

I know this. I was explaining to WW what changing the EXE name would do. Personally I don't use Steam unless I even need to. I have no need of the Steam overlay in non-Steam games.edward850 wrote:Nothing you just described has anything to do with Steam shortcuts. You don't have to do any such nonsense to run ZDoom from/with Steam.

Fair enough, I suppose, but what I was actually asking was, "Why would you WANT to do that?" As in, does it actually provide any advantages? But I suppose the curiosity is sated now.

Re: ZDoom with mods AND Steam Overlay?
There was a point where any launcher would not gain the overlay if it was set to keep the launcher window open; only working if the launcher window closed out upon launching. Steam must have changed at some point to make programs "inherit" this call for the overlay so you can have it in either mode and it plays fine.wildweasel wrote: All you should need to do is add ZDoom (or better yet, ZDL or a similar launcher) to Steam as a Non-Steam Game from the "Add a new game..." menu in your Library. From my recollection, the Steam overlay will still "pass through" to ZDoom or GZDoom through whatever launcher you use.
A tip, though, for anyone considering either launcher: ZDL's file load order is from top to bottom, whereas ZDE (the beta at least, I'm not sure if the main download has had a recent release lately) loads from bottom to top. This was driving me absolutely crazy when I switched from ZDL to ZDE, as apparently it copies what launching from a command line does (or more specifically, -pwad) in a wonky "first listed is last to load" fashion.

I'm curious about that, how exactly does one go about adding tiles?edward850 wrote:Further more, doing it properly means you can add tile images to your mods
Re: ZDoom with mods AND Steam Overlay?
In tile mode, right click shortcut -> add tile graphic.

Wait, what?!wildweasel wrote:And if you're worried about Steam tracking your game hours, I'm pretty sure it'll still track those for non-Steam games.
Non-Steam games(aka Steam shortcuts) never has such game hours things like those official released Steam games(yeah, the overlay still tell you about times you played in that session but it'll be nothing after quit the game), only the last date you play.
That's why some users want to replaced the DOSBox exe to fool Steam to collect the game hours of DooM games on Steam, pointless but it still working.
Unless we're talking about different "game hours"...?
