The Lost Episodes of Doom (ZDoom Patch 2.0)

Post by BlueFireZ88 »

[NOTE}: This mod is now for Doom 2 due to Episode 4, the first three episodes are still playable without issue).

In January of 1995, a level set for Doom 1 was actually given a commercial release through a book sold through retail stores.

Dubbed, "The Lost Episodes of Doom", the book (written by Jonathan Mendoza and published by Sybex) contained a set of techbase style levels designed by Christen Klie and Bob Carter, acting as a parallel story to Doom 1 by taking place on Jupiter and its moons. The book itself acted as, not only a strategy guide, but also insight into how the levels were made by Klie and Carter.

The purpose of this project is to reintroduce this classic level set by using features introduced in ZDoom to make the game feel more independent of its base game, and really delve into the science and story behind it. Actual research was done on Jupiter and its moons to up the presentation of this level set, by making the setting as close to Jupiter as possible, as opposed to Mars.

The text file included explains more on the story, levels, and features of the wad.
From Version 1:
1.Original Level and episode names have been restored.
2.New intermissions detailing the plot of Lost Episodes to a much greater degree.
3.New Sky backgrounds (Including the new E4), and an interactive sky in E3.

From Version 2:
1.New Episode 4 based in Doom 2 (Remnants of Earth).
2.New classic HUD with a darker look (inspired by PSX Final Doom).
3.New Final Boss for E4 (No Spoilers here)!
4.New music for all levels with a collection of classic Doom tunes and more.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just the Patch this time. If you wish to have a full mod, use SLADE 3 and copy the
levels from the original Lost Episodes wad (JPTR_V40.wad) and place them inside
the patch.

For those who don't know how to use SLADE 3 and wish a combined form mod, PM me
and I'll give the download link per request.

I hope you enjoy this classic level set!

Yes, those levels are cool.

I don't think this was an essential/necessary task but the update won't hurt either. Thanks.

Cool work. I really like these maps and it's nice to see them getting some attention again. I always thought of this wad as a spin off series from the main canon. Kinda like Torchwood to Doctor Who...

I tried a while back to do something similar but making it vanilla compatible but I failed miserably as I'm not very skilled!

I do have one suggestion though, if you're interested. That would be to changed the music. I don't know about anyone else but if I hear E1M1 one more time I think I'll kill myself! :P Maybe something like some of the tracks from DTWID? They kind of allude to the original soundtrack but have their own flavour.

Regardless, thanks for doing this. :)

Thanks for these. I remember playing these somehow, in the mid-'90s... I think my best friend had the book. Should be interesting to see how much of these maps, if any, I can remember.

Will this use Doom2 as a baseline or still doom1 ? It would be nice if it was upgraded to include the Doom 2 weapons and monsters :)

Heh, are you going to remake the Stonehenge area? Would love to see some giant stone sprites.

I don't want to get people's expectations to high. This is still mainly an updated patch for the original Lost Episodes wad, and unfortunately, this is not a remake of those levels. There will be some new stuff here and there and I hope that will enhance the original experience greatly.

I will list ALL of the features available come 9:00 PM pacific time on Monday night.

To at least answer Skrell's question: Yes, this is mainly a Doom 2 wad now due to the newly added Episode 4 (which is Doom 2 based). While the first three episodes are still Doom 1 based (as it's still a commercial wad), the patch will allow those episodes to run with the proper resources. I've already played through the original set and the new levels and everything's ready to go.

Monday night, 9PM Pacific, it will be here.

On a side note: I'm not against the idea of a remake of this level set (or doing a PSX and add Doom 2 enemies to the Doom 1 levels), it's just that school is starting up again for me, and I won't have time for major projects for a good while. If anyone does, however, wishes to try their hand a remake, I'll offer all the help I can, given the time I've got.

Been sick lately, missed the last deadline due to feeling like crap.

Well, up on the first post, is the version 2.0 Patch for Lost Episodes.

Make sure you got JPTR_V40.wad and your gold (though even if you don't I got you covered).
