Force Aspect Ratio For HUD Weapons

Post by patrik »

Sorry if this was already suggested, but i didnt find it.

I have suggestion about Force Aspect Ratio For HUD Weapons. In my case I have display that uses resolution 1366x768, that means I am using 16:9 screen aspect radio. If I play Hexen, or some mods, HUD weapons are ugly centered on screen, so I see empty spaces to left and right sides of selected HUD weapons. I know that I can use Force Aspect Ratio for fixing this, but it is only partial solution because I dont want to change screen ratio, I like 16:9.

So to sum things up, I would like to have stretched and/or scaled up HUD weapons in widescreen aspect ratios so I wont see those ugly empty spaces. It would work in same way as Force Aspect Ratio, but it would affect only HUD weapons. I know that in vanilla Doom IWADs, it would be bit useless (except for reloading animation of SSG), but Hexen and some mods (that have weapons not centered to bottom of screen but to sides) would benefit greatly from this in aesthetic way and I am sure that lot of widescreen Zdoom users would be very grateful for this feature.

Thanks for taking my suggestion into account. :thumb:

The stretching would look a thousand times worse.

Sorry, but I strongly disagree, there are ports that already fits HUD weapons to screen ratio, and I dont want to have it as default and/or mandatory thing, it would only work as optional setting for people who want it, so it wouldnt bother others.

You're better off looking for a mod which extends the graphics. Like this one, though I don't think the Hexen and Heretic parts have been released yet.

I'm sure that there was a similar request a couple of years or so ago. IIRC, the request was to automagically shift the offsets of weapons like the Hexen fighter fist. The question there being how would ZDoom know which weapons to shift? This is a more workable suggestion I suspect but the end result would look stretchy (esp on the centred weapons - ie most of the weapons) and I'd be surprised if it didn't get [no]'d as well.

I dont want to sound supercilious, but is really reason that some people find it ugly adequate reason to abolish whole idea? I mean, I am sure there are other people who would like this new feature. Aesthetics are pure subjective matter of personal taste of every person.

Interesting word "supercilious". I believe it is derived from super (above) and cilia (hair) referring literally to the raised eyebrow that a person being supercilious might have.

Aaaanyway, I suspect some things may have been rejected purely on aesthetics in the past but a far more common reason is the work versus benefit balance. If the result is considered ugly and the fix is really just a kludge rather than a true solution then it would be perfectly reasonable for the devs to feel that their time could be better spent and they may reject it not solely because it is ugly but it being ugly may be part of the equation. And remember, for the devs, they may feel that their time may be better spent watching TV or going to a movie or the pub or whatever because ZDoom is a hobby for them after all.

Which reminds me... really need to fix the gargoyles' butt muscles in my Hexen status bar because they're so anatomically incorrect...

I knew about that topic before. But it would be nice if download link for fighters gauntlets actually worked and Firestorm had one in first place. :-?

It would be best if all edits could be placed into game specific WADs that just can be placed in the autoload list without manually compiling them. Posting the raw graphics is kind of pointless.

Anyway, the suggestion itself gets 'no'd.
