Give me a heads up.

Post by Dynamo »

So I've been looking for something new to play and Jenesis 3 fit the bill nicely (congratulations to Jimmy who made a very good mapset). However I've also wanted to play something ZDoom-related, so like, a ZDoom megawad.

What are some of the best ZDoom megawads (if possible, recent ones)? Even if they aren't 32 maps, even 7 are acceptable.

INB4 Knee Deep in Zdoom, Phobos Directive and similar wads. I don't like that type of mods, sorry, I just want something along the lines of, well, Jenesis 3 or Plutonia, except for ZDoom. And hopefully something not too complicated. A straight up megawad with zdoom features, in short

Those aren't for ZDoom.

I guess you know about Demon Eclipse. :P
Simplicity is great for fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay.
Dark7 and Mission Pack are both short but cool-as-hell ZDoom mapsets.
The Great Bicycle Mystery is a tad surreal and highly co-op-oriented but still worth a play.
007: License to Spell Doom and Super Sonic Doom are by the same author (TheUltimateDoomer) and are seriously cool.
And who could forget Massmouth 1 and 2.
Also Claustrophobia: The Walls Close In. God damn.

Another vote for Simplicity, by far my most favorite map set ever, although you are linking to the older version of it. :P Newer one here

You could take a look [wiki=Category:WADs_created_for_ZDoom]here[/wiki] and read through the descriptions.

I know most of them, but I really only remember liking Dark7 (played it when it came out on doomwadstation and it was awesome) which was the most straight up one. Another wad that comes to mind is Threshold of pain but so far only Dark7 plays like other oldschool mods. Also, none of them seem to be recent. Thanks for the input though :)

Err... Scourge might be up your street - but it was my first released .WAD, so it's not very even in quality or particularly ZDoom intensive (it basically uses jumping and a few text lumps like DECORATE).

I've doen a couple of giant maps that work along these lines: Warpzone and Coils of the Twisted Tale are your best bets for maps from me that feel like multi-map ZDoom episodes. Tiny Chances of Survival is a 5 map episode of tiny maps that form a survival horror themed episode too, but they might be too small for what you're after.

Hum... NeoDoom is from 2006, but I believe that it has the style you want.

Armagedoom (precursor of BrutalDoom) is also a good map mod with no complex-boring gameplay.
