Doom sprites HD (8x) version v03 released

Projects that have specifically been abandoned or considered "dead" get moved here, so people will quit bumping them. If your project has wound up here and it should not be, contact a moderator to have it moved back to the land of the living.

yeah sunglasses version is definitely coolest but
in game-testing proved that closest to original when it comes to "feeling" is combination of md2 skin with some previous HD elements something like that
(please notice on more versin of IMP - nighmare IMP [first on left], pretty scary at least when I played with this sprite in-game.)

Definitely like the middle imp better if only because it's more faithful to the way the original looks.

Something kinda bugs me though, it's like it's looking down a bit, rather than all tense and aggressive slightly jutting its chin forward like the canon imp. Very, very minor thing but I thought it might be worth pointing out (with the qualifier that I have a non-trivial amount of wine in my system at the moment).

I like the baron at the end of page 8, that's a great HD sprite. The Imp in the middle is close to being perfect, but I noticed the head is flat on top, and his mouth isn't open as wide as the original, although it's likely he would look surprised if you dropped his jaw that low.

Another recommendation for the imp is, to make his eyes brighter, in the middle sprite they just blend into the rest of his body, have you considered making them glow? If you made them brighter, it would draw more attention to them, and add contrast, which would improve his face.

The pinky's face is very intimidating, very nice job on that one.

For the imp, why is there blood around the spikes, shouldn't they be part of the demon's skeleton or something - like horns I mean?

I'm noticing that all the HD sprites we seem to prefer are based off the md2 models from jDoom/Doomsday.

Gangly imp teeth just look goofy and out of place. Demon's looking nicer though.

The former humans being demonic-controlled instead of actual zombies is canon, IIRC, and they sound like imps, so maybe... The imp is the last stage of the demonic posession of humans? They lose their hair, their skin darkens, spikes push out from their skeletons and erupt through their skin... :P

No, it was about an extra chromosome that either made people superhuman, or most of the time, turned them into zombies, which turned into Imps, which turned into Hell Knights.

hey,

First of all the reason I am playing with look is that this is about only thing I can do for next 1.5 months (out of town, working on crappy netbook)
as soon as december 15 th I am back to bigscreen desktop and back to scaling, polishing - systematic work. But in meantime maybe I can get HD heads for most of sprites...
The most problematic are former humans. HD heads done so far doesnt fit in game, if someone know good inspiration, artwork etc...

From what you wrote IMP (middle one) is not great but at least seems to be acceptable, Baron of hell (and hellkinght after re-coloring) seems to be OK-ish, demon with few touches also maybe fine.
And right, artist behing md2 models skins was a genius and his skins are really outstanding. Using his skins as base seems to be best approach. Then its easy to add elements from artworks (barons eyes, teeths, part of jaw, demonst tongue, teeths, horns are artwork derived add-ons, IMP is actually only one not based at all on md2 model skin) so obviously before I will get anywhere I should contac him and ask for permission but I am still looking to conctact him if anyone knows his email please let me know

actually I was thinking like amv2k9, IMP as human transforming into demon-sort of half human half demon, suffering from spikes growing inside of his body, kinda creepy concept.
But that just cosmetic change, and agree regarding my version of "nightmare imp" that everything looks out of place. I just have this concept in my head, that real imp shouldnt look too "polite"
and his teeth should be all white, polished like he just had his dental work done before invading MARS and EARTH just to look good in newspapers. The reason why "nighmare imp" look horrible is that I have not much artistic skills:(

That version of imp was basically copy-paste od DaniJ outstanding artwork, but maybe I dont have enough skills to transform is into sprite because people seemed to not like that imp.

Actually ive tested about milion versions of imp to get right "feeling" in-game here are older ones:

Here's my thoughts on your imp faces:

Cthulu - geriatric imp forgot his dentures
Bloody imp - it doesn't replace the original, but it would be an interesting extra monster, perhaps something with a bite attack

Nightmare imp - his eyes and teeth remind me of blood sucking eels, like the sea Lamprey

Which is terrifying, but it makes the imp look less intelligent

dental work imp: The lower jaw is excellent, it's even the right proportion to the old imp's jaw. Remember, the white teeth add contrast, which is a good thing.

My only complaint is his forehead, my guess is that it is too tall, but it's not very significant.

The who-knows-what imp's head looks like a mixture of duke3d sprites and doom sprites, it would be good for an addon monster, though.
