Doom for the elderly

Post by Squishybrick »

I've got a ton of awesome maps and mods I've always wanted to show off to my family, but the only problem is, that constant bobbing of the player's view
literally makes my dad nauseous after only 5 minutes of play!...

Is there any way to remove the constant left/right bobbing of the player when he moves?.. (Not the weapon bob, the fps camera bob)

And as a bonus request, how do I go amongst giving the player walking sounds to play while he moves? My dad plays a lot of unreal tournament, so I want him to feel at home at least a little when playing such a different game...

My dad was the one who introduced doom to me when I was only around 5 or 6, and I've always wanted to show him how it's changed over the years with all these
source ports, mods, and other things..

The only thing I can think of is to set MOVEBOB to 0 in the console. It will disable the vertical camera bobbing, but it will disable the weapon bobbing too.

Ohhh, man, that is NOT going to be an easy task. Fortunately, I believe there are people who've done that work already in various "upgraded Doom" packages that also add Nashgore effects.

I've done footsteps - it takes a modified player class that drops invisible "footstep" projectiles that disappear after a short number of tics (I find 5 or 6 is a good number) and make a noise when hitting the floor. If you want the footsteps to be different per floor, don't make the footsteps themselves make any noise at all and simply import njsplash.wad into your project - the footsteps will hit the floor and cause the "splash" noise, and poof, footsteps that respond to the environment.

It could be if this were added. (Someone go and make that patch!)

I also have footsteps done - arguably the only type that uses ACS and is far more accurate than what Decorate will ever accomplish.

It's worth pointing out that this only adds sounds to flats. If textures have been used on a floor, they will not make a noise. They can be added to the terrain definitions though.

Well, I made an ACS footsteps "system" for a certain mod myself, with the help of David Ferstat.
Spoiler:
I dont know how you made yours, but mine isnt very complex (if at all). It just plays one "set" of footsteps regardless of the type of floor player is on (as long as is standing in the floor, of course :P ). The only thing that it does is play the steps at a different rate if player is walking or running, but that's about it.

it tracks velocity, making the sound play more often and at a higher volume the faster you go, you can choose which sounds will play on which flats and etc.

Well, it sounds like is the whole pack then! :P

Why dont you make it some sort of resource? If it's that complete, that'd be really helpful for a bunch of folks around. That ugly decorate method is horrible when you use earphones :(

Thank you all for your answers and tips, now my dad can play doom with me without getting sick because of how the marine walks around like a drunken sailor in the 1st person view.

I may or may not use the footsteps idea, but probably will in future project ideas. I hope this thread may help others with the same problem I have. :D
