Nmn: you can always pause the console, turn off the TV and leave it.

Yes I did that. When I came back home I found my poor NES fried. Way to go.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the concept of lives arose from video games that were designed to limit how much time each player got on the machine in order to maximize profit.

How long did you leave it on, Nmn?

I once had an Atari die after being left on for 24 hours, but never had any issues with an NES. (Well, I once fried my brother's 3rd-party adapter by plugging in the wrong voltage to the machine, but that doesn't count)

:shucks:
I went to school at 8 a.m., got back at 4 p.m. that gives us 8 hours. I was playing-still remember-Guardian Legend, somewhere in the wasteland area. I really had a boss fight and paused it. When I got home my poor console didn't work-either reset or power. When I got closer I smell burnt plastic..

Mmm, yes, I do like save points... the type that are ever present in most console games these days. I much prefer them than being able to save whenever. I woudn't mind unlimited saves at certain points too, because if the save spots were placed strategically it can still create that tension (Where is the next damn save point! :D).

Although it confuses me as to why Kapcom allowed PC users to save anywhere for Silent Hill 3... Stupid idea! Why?! >.<

Also, for big levels... that is where lives and check points come in handy ;).

I think saving at any moment and quick saving is a must for any game.

I'd like to contribute to the discussion again with my thoughts on the life system in general. Being a hybrid gamer (I play PC and console games equally), the extra lives system really depends on the game. Games like Doom should absolutely NOT have lives. Games like Ikaruga etc. SHOULD have lives, because it's impractical to have to save in an overhead shooter. To have or not have lives depends solely on the game mechanics of a given game. If your game involves survival instinct, and going as far as possible, saving is just not a good addition to the game mechanic.

I disagree... I think there is no right or wrong... I just think that constantly being able to save willy nilly makes the game far simpler as you can just resume at any time. True, it takes away a lot of the frustration... but I honestly dont' see a point in any of this... I mean, this thread... who cares if a game has saves or not... really... it's not gonna cxhange the world... the fact of the matter is that Blustar is a troll and you all retaliate to his comments... which is pritty fumb if you ask me... you constantly feed him by bitching at him and getting mean... that's whgat he wants... so why do you constanly give him what hewants? Just ignore him!
