Nice. Doing little one-off low-pay surveys.

Or the opinions of other minorities on whether or not there is racial equality.Ceeb wrote:Apparently they're looking for straight white males to discuss equal rights with.
Which, of course, there isn't. We have a set of double-standards. For example, "We have 35% african-americans in this school, but we don't have 35% african-americans in the gifted program. I guess we should specifically add some, despite the fact that the people we're going to add don't qualify."
Racial equality means treating people equally, not making sure statistics are exactly the same across the board.
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
It doesn't bug me because I get points either way, it just seems funny. Most of the time these things are totally incoherant anyway. For example, I was once asked to pick which of the following states I lived in. I was given the choice of Alabama, Idaho, Miami, Canada, and Cuba. >_>
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
That is something that is often referred to a "positive discrimination". However, there is nothing positive about it if you are the person who ends up losing out because of it.Ghastly_dragon wrote:"We have 35% african-americans in this school, but we don't have 35% african-americans in the gifted program. Agreed - though not just racial equality.Ghastly_dragon wrote:Racial equality means treating people equally, not making sure statistics are exactly the same across the board.
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
It's still discrimination. Leaving aside how it might affect someone who should be there, if the person-in-question shouldn't be in said program, he's going to have a much harder time than someone who did qualify.Enjay wrote:That is something that is often referred to a "positive discrimination".
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Am I the only one who gets the feeling that the only thing these sorts of acts/organizations/etc. do is try and reinforce the belief that there's still a reason to stay divided across racial/gender/preference lines? I mean, it's a positive effort, but the only reason there's a problem is because people think there's a problem, you know?
Not to knock any organizations or anything. The only time this is really a negative concern is when this sort of backwards-thinking reverse discrimination stuff is used. But I doubt there's any argument I could make from here that hasn't been said already.

Finally got regular MSN working.
Turns out my firewall was blocking WLCOMM.exe which is probably the executable that tells Microsoft what porn I'm looking at or something.
Also, since we're on the subject of girls girls girls, what's the best way to deal with it when you really like someone but they live, say, on another continent?

First off, I'm not sure whether to take you seriously or not.Ceeb wrote:Also, since we're on the subject of girls girls girls, what's the best way to deal with it when you really like someone but they live, say, on another continent?
But long distance relationships are not impossible. I didn't so much as see my wife (then girlfriend) more than a handful of times over three years, but we kept close through phone calls, letters, etc. It was hard, but worth it. The biggest issue is just to keep reminding yourself that you care enough for them to continue making the effort. For immediate needs, a phone call ("I just wanted to talk to you") is great, whereas for long-distance relationship building, letters are the order of the day. Avoid email and chat unless there's not really any other options, they're too impersonal.
Hope that answers the question.

Well the girls girls girls part was a joke, but I seriously do have feelings for a guy who lives hella far away.
That said, he may be visiting America next year for a week, but that's a long ways away, and a very short time to even hang out with him.
Also, bad Siggi. Bad!

Skype (the Internet equivalent of phone calls) does wonders, though.Caligari_87 wrote:First off, I'm not sure whether to take you seriously or not.Ceeb wrote:Also, since we're on the subject of girls girls girls, what's the best way to deal with it when you really like someone but they live, say, on another continent?

Just finished watching the Gantz Anime. I swear, I literally shouted WHAT THE GOD-DAMNED FRAK at the top of my voice at the ending. IT. DID. NOT. MAKE. ANY. SENSE.

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
A very good point, some organizations look at it like "opportunity", but not everyone desires (or is able to) cope with a harder program. If they don't have the ability/don't care, they'll be miserable, not to mention, the resources are wasted instead of being used on somebody who really could benefit from a program like that.Ghastly_dragon wrote:It's still discrimination. ...that's kind of weird to think about
I always imagine my ex when I say stuff like that, attaching a he to her brings up really weird images

Warnings probably aren't too fond of you, either.
