possible bug, not sure
okay, i had to test some monster modification thing that was made with DEHACKED, and i had to test it on nuts.wad {and i regretted that}
but, since it was near the end of that level, i didn't want to fight a huge horde of monsters at the beginning, so i turned notarget on. i remembered that i included graphics and sounds for the Disc Of Repulsion in something as well, so i decided to attack a couple imps with it. however, even with notarget on, usually when you attack a monster, it'll retaliate. when i used the discs....they got hurt severely, but didn't notice me or retaliate.

Maybe they don't retaliate if you use an inventory item, since that's not really like "shooting" them (i.e. I think when you use an inventory item there is no real "shooter", the effect of the item just appears around you).
Hence no shooter would mean there is no one for the imps to retaliate against.

perhaps i should explain this in a different way...
step 1: turn notarget on
step 2: get discs of repulsion
step 3: go to a group of monsters
step 4: use disc
what happens:
1: monsters ignore you completely despite the fact you harmed them, and play their attack animations, but then stop and go back to waiting
2: if it's a melee monster, if it's close enough to another, it'll attack another monster and they start battling each other.

In a few ways, this is sorta realistic.
1: If you were randomly hit by something, it'd be natural for you to retaliate, right? But then you realize nothing's there, so you just carry on with your normal daily business.
2: If you got randomly hit, you probably would hit the guy next to you because you thought it was him/her that hit you. And then you get a fight.
You're right though, this doesn't sound like normal Doom behavior.

If you push one monster into another it's that monster that is doing the damage, not you. If you push a monster into a wall it's the monster that is damaging itself. The disc doesn't do any damage by itself so all the behavior is perfectly normal and 100% correct no matter how much you don't like it.
