Hey! Few tips for a newbie?

Post by UnDinE »

Howdy dudes. Im Undine. Ive been playing doom for i dont know how long, and ive been playing some AWESOME maps, like the 1024 series, HR2, and many great maps. My laptop fails at running TUTNT though. I wish to become a mapper for the community. Ive been inspired by mapping in Timesplitters and building levels through that. I have some questions.

Is it hard to understand the interface in Doom Builder? I have a hard time getting it..its unlike any other map-making thing ive seen.

Can you design or edit textures in photoshop and use them in Doom2?

Uh...any tips and what to look out for as a new mapper?

Thanks :D Im an insane doom and quake player, and marveled in architexture, especially in the Instagib pack.

1: It's easy to use, but takes some getting used to. Just make good use of 3D mode.

2: Absolutely! You need a lump editor (like SlumpEd) to insert your edited textures.

3: Use the Wiki when you have a problem. Only come here when you're truly at a loss for what to do.

I've been in your shoes, man.

The first time I downloaded DooM Builder was before I owned DooM!!

I hope you're using 2, though.

As for the interface... the wiki should explain it good.

I wouldn't worry about replacing anything other than levels for now, though. A bit complicated for new ones. :)

Yeah youre right. Im gonna take my time and learn how it works a bit. My first couple of maps might not be so great, but ill learn from my mistakes. I would like to insert my own skys however. I like the space station and hellish architecture the best.

I assume that you'll be using DB2.
Go to the DB2 website http://www.doombuilder.com/
from Downloads download the Doom Builder: An Illustrated Guide
and from Tutorials check out AlysiumX's videos.
Other than that, look at a boatload of maps and learn from what has gone before. Then insert your own ideas.

From time to time mapper's block will set in. In that case I like to have Oblige build some levels for me and I modify them to my liking.

i speak from experience when i suggest that you should pick a favorite map from either Doom 1 or 2 and try remaking it from scratch and updating it using newer features. it helps you to learn a ton of the basics.

that and do not attempt a megawad for a while... those always end up in disaster if you try for that too soon.

It's even more awesome when you have it add custom monsters and weapons, alas for Skulltag, as outlined in this Doomworld thread
http://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-editin ... -released/

Yeah, I know, some mappers think it below them to even contemplate playing an Oblige build map, but they are so much fun ... :D

You wont have to worry about me building a megawad. I'll just end up building 2 or 3 maps that are less stressful on me. I like maps that are challenging but merciful in size and ammo.

Yeah I hear the mappers block. I'll tell you something about the Illustrated Guide. It's a good place to start. I read the first 2 pages then deleted it and started learning on my own. This forum and the wiki are the best, if you ask me. So my advice is to start small and progress until you have a question. Look it up in the wiki. Then if you need more help, that's what the forum is for. Oh and don't start on the impossible megawad after 2 weeks of mapping like i did. BAAAAD idea. The shear size is what overcame me.

I started a megawad for my first project. And I agree with them; don't do it. :blergh:

Solo megawad projects really dont go well from what i hear.

Im really good in photoshop, and i designed a few textures for Quake. I never mapped for it though. If i designed and edited some flats for Doom, is it ok to submit them here? I dont wanna run into copyright infringement lol I know how it feels when people steal your stuff.

Submitting them is just fine. In fact, we have a Resource Forum just for that.

Just keep in mind that by showing them online, you're implicitly stating that you don't mind if other people use them (a common practice, no worries). If you'd rather keep them to yourself, just hang on to them in secret until you release your map or just show some screenshots of the new textures in action.

Otherwise, welcome!
