I am going to have to say Episode 1 but they are all great in their own ways.

thy flesh consumed was my fav of doom1, i loved that it was actually hard instead of easy mode like the other episodes.

Heh, wow, yeah not a lot of people like TSOH. But yeah, I voted for that, the first time I ran through the full game and started playing the second episode, I loved it. The cyberdemon boss was epic, it took me a few tries to finally beat him. Ah the vanilla Doom days.

I loved TSoH too, but didn't vote for it because it wasn't my favorite.

The Shores of Hell.

While E1's maps are the absolute classic, they've also become a bit too familiar. E2 has the best Doom ambiance IMO: corrupted techbase. It's gritty, damaged and aged, and there are Things That Just Do Not Belong in the middle of the technical equipment. (KDiZD actually used this style massively for its E1 remake, rather than staying true to the E1 feel.)

Inferno, meh. It was a bit of a disappointment. Some maps were nice but other felt unfinished. Mount Erebus, in particular, is just a haphazard mess.

Finally, E4. That one is nice and has a good aesthetic theme, but suffers from being a latecomer with no real place in the story.

Episode 1. I loved the music in the Episode, and I also thought the layout was designed very well. Episode 3 would be my next, because it gave you a good challenge, and it had it's fair share of good maps.

E1M2, the dark area with all the computer consoles that is just beyond the red door, made the biggest impression on me the first time I played it, and to this day it is still my favorite map/style of map. I don't remember any maps from episodes 2 or 3 that had the same feeling of a dark and spooky base crawling with evil monsters.
