What's the best Doom episode? (Oh boy, a poll!)
This may seem like a strange idea, but which episode of Doom do you like best? I'm just curious here.

Voted E1, for the great usage of windows, ledges, other height variation, interconnectivity, outdoor areas, and so on to create an enthralling 3D world within the Doom 0.99 limitations. The other episodes had some interesting ideas, but the execution was generally very poor -- not just visually, but in layout design as well.
Also, personally I'd recommend scrapping the "I like other games more!" poll choices; they're not really related to the question and will just confuse the results of what you're actually asking. Regardless of whether someone might like Doom 2 more, this isn't a poll about that.

I can't actually say on this one. All of the episodes stick out to me in various ways. Especially E4 for some reason (I blame the song choices. The E1M8 song was perfect for Hell Beneath)

Thinking about it, you're right. You'll need to re-vote though.esselfortium wrote:Also, personally I'd recommend scrapping the "I like other games more!" poll choices; they're not really related to the question and will just confuse the results of what you're actually asking. Episode 1 was always the enduring classic for me. Something about how it actually managed to be spooky, despite it not being that dark. The rainforest sky coupled with the moody music really does it for me. The other episodes have their moments, but Knee Deep In The Dead will always be king for me.

Re: What's the best Doom episode? (Oh boy, a poll!)
I remember I always liked the first episode of doom, and the first few levels of doom2 best.
When I was younger, I had doom shareware and doom2. I had played the first episode of doom a lot, and the just first few levels of doom2, because doom2 would always crash after a few minutes of being played (I didn't really figure out saving/loading until the next part). I eventually got doom95 installed (and soon quickly moved to other sourceports, doomsday, legacy, and then zdoom), and played through more of doom2, and I installed the full version of doom1 (surprisingly, I'd found my dad actually had the retail version on three floppy disks). And I was pretty disappointed in the rest of the levels.
It really seemed like only the first few levels actually looked like anywhere. I had a few favorites of this new set of levels, but always liked to go back to the first few.

As I said in the other thread, I always liked Doom2 more than its predecessor!
Although I really like the entirety of E1 and I certainly think this is the most balanced and thought-out episode of Doom, I still voted for E3 (disregarding Doom2 completely).
Thinking in the spirit of KDiZD, I just feel E3 has the greatest potential to be turned into something really outstanding... I guess I'm just really into the hellish theme, wich I always liked better than the standard (infested) tech-base!

One thing I do like is playing through all four episodes of Doom in the PS1 version. I can't stand to pistol-start. Unfortunately, that makes the first few levels of each episode very trivial (especially when you begin Doom 2 with a full arsenal, SSG included since you can find it in one of the levels between Doom and Doom II
).

Knee-deep in the Dead is always going to win a poll like this. I mean, the significance to video game history along is enough to propel it up there. It's hard to express how much of modern first person shooters, and even PC gaming as a whole, hinge upon those first 9 levels.

E2. Had some great maps which really wanted you to get the hell out of there (Halls of the Damned etc)
Re: What's the best Doom episode? (Oh boy, a poll!)
All of them.
Re: What's the best Doom episode? (Oh boy, a poll!)
Probably Episode 3 because it had the best gameplay for me overall (didn't like E3M7 much though). Secret level was very clever, difficulty was hard enough to almost seem challenging, unlike Episode 4 which did occaissionally bother me with the lack of amm oin places or whatever. Episode 2 has the best boss battle and some of the better levels and music, and Episode 1 has the best theming and layout. However, being gameplay oriented, Episode 3 wins, especially with the first 3 levels and Mt. Erebus taken into consideration (Limbo and the Unholy Chapel really weren't that good though).

I always liked that episode where the cacodemon finds out that it's pregnant and had a guest appearance by Ted McGinley and Cousin Oliver. Which one was that...oh yeah, season 1, episode 3.
