Original Doom settings?

Post by Mr Scapetti »

I've noticed that zDoom adds many new features such as looking up and down and new effects and stuff... but I want to know what settings I should have to make it play as close to the original as possible. Stuff like the compatibility settings and stuff! Thanks :)

Turning off free look, jumping and crouching, and setting the screen resolution to 320x200 with a capped framerate ought to be enough for most people. Obviously, Doom didn't have cross hairs, particles, or transparency, and the default automap colors are different (You can select to use doom automap colors though), but those are just graphical effects that don't really affect gameplay.

Also turn on "actors are infinitely tall" in the compatibility options.

And also play around with the other compat options if you feel like re-enabling old horrible Doom bugs vanilla Doom features. :P

Although, I would suggest that if you are looking for that "as close to the original Doom but on a modern OS" experience, there are other ports which do it better because it is a much higher priority for them than it is for Zdoom.

People speak highly of Chocolate Doom (never tried it myself) and PRBoom.

There is one very important vanilla-experience feature which no other port has yet though... OPL synth emulation!

(Yes yes I know technically it wasn't what they wanted it to sound like but most consumer sound cards back then had that crappy wavetable synth sound)

I might try chocolate doom out thanks :) but no fear... I'll still use zdoom! I'm a bit mixed because I want to play updated Doom but I also want to play original Doom XD If I have both of these I shall be fine and dandy :)

Copy and paste that into your ini under [Doom.ConsoleAliases]
open game:
bind flags1 somekey

Its as close as I can figure out, for vanilla doom settings.

For Skulltag servers:
Name=rcon_ns
Command=rcon compatflags 0;rcon dmflags 2905156;rcon dmflags2 1024
Name=rcon_os
Command=rcon compatflags 8388607;rcon dmflags 2823236;rcon dmflags2 1088
