Best Compatibility Settings to play old-school-style DOOM?
I've been having a fit of nostalgia lately and for some reason I want to play DOOM on its native settings with ZDOOM. What are the best settings to use to achieve this effect?

For some reason, DOOM 95 runs much slower than ZDOOM on my computer, so I'd rather use ZDOOM for this. 'sides, the mouse feature won't work on XP systems in D95.

If you want oldschool you better look for a different port. ZDoom is probably not the best choice, especially if the small things are important to you.
PrBoom is a good start for oldschool but its default configuration is also quite different so you will have to make some changes there as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, guys. I've tried Chocolate DOOM, and I'm loving it! So nostalgic! I'm not going to forget about ZDOOM though (too many custom maps these days require it and it's my only way of playing Hexen and Heretic for now).
Speaking of which, are there any "classic ports" I might be able to find for Hexen and Heretic, or perhaps some compatibility settings under ZDOOM for get a similar effect for these games? Thanks a bunch!

I would say just turn off jumping, crouching, mouse-look, lower your resolution, turn auto-aim up to max, turn transluceny off, disable particles, and set all the compatibility options...
It's not going to really be true Doom anyway unless you play DOOM2.EXE... but you can get close.

This is exactly what Chocolate Doom is for, like Isle said. You can't get any closer than that :pHotWax wrote:I would say just turn off jumping, crouching, mouse-look, lower your resolution, turn auto-aim up to max, turn transluceny off, disable particles, and set all the compatibility options...

Another vote for Chocolate Doom, my only gripe being it doesn't have OPL synth emulation... (NOT OLDSKOOL ENOUGH!!!)
Re: Best Compatibility Settings to play old-school-style DOOM?
320x200 finally works in zdoom!! But after playing it I hated it and went back up to 1280x800.
It's weird that in zdoom, the resolution has been increased, monster movement interpolation is used (I wonder if it can be interpolated more...), framerate is uncapped... But 8-bit mode is still the only way to go. The fog divisions aren't too noticeable in vanilla or 320x200 zdoom, but with an increase in resolution comes an increase in fog-division noticeability. But the trade-off is worth it.
For oldschool I use:
1280x800, 640x400, 320x200, or taller equivalents
KEYBOARD! Autoaim, ESDF movement, arrows turn, uparrow fires. (autorun on for me, I hated holding shift in vanilla)
no particles, fuzz effect, no sky stretching, weapon drops on floor, yadda yadda yadda
