You MAY urinate on your computer in small controlled bursts without risk of permanent hard drive failure, however it is recommended that any such activity take place on the keyboard and nowhere near the CPU. Never urinate onto an exposed hard drive without authorization and supervision of a trained computer technician.

I use WinRAR to make Zips. Because I also still use pkzip/pkunzip. Hell, pkzipfix was able to salvage at least one file from damaged a two file zip that WinRAR couldn't extract either of. What's particularly annoying is that the specifications of RAR change. I had to get a newer version of WinRAR in order to extract from newer RARs.

.ha, which noone seems to have mentioned
and, uh, that .??_ format that windows distribution is compressed to (e.g. .sys -> .sy_)
there's no standard app in windows to make cabs, but there are some (e.g. CabMan), iirc one also comes with msvs

Cabarc (which I use) comes with Visual Studio, and XP and some other Windows come with a simple command-line .cab maker. Its biggest problem is that Microsoft's standard tools (other than cabarc) ignore any folder information even though the format is perfectly capable of storing them.

The .??_ files are just single-file cabs.

Is this Cabarc free? Can I get it from anywhere for... free? Or did I just not read anything and it actually turns out that I can get it from Microsofts site?

Damn...

If you have XP, there's a makecab.exe in your system32 folder (it may exist in other versions as well, but I can't test that). It's command line, but not very complex. Knock yourself out.

I'm pretty sure makecab can't handle directories.

A quick google for "cabarc" reveals this Microsoft page as the first hit: Microsoft Cabinet Software Development Kit. It's command-line too. If you want to use it, always include -m lzx:21 on the command line, otherwise the compression is no better than zip (so you might as well just use zip).
