We had ages, OK, what about login names?

Post by MartinHowe »

Hi all

After the player-by-age poll, I got to thinking (yeah, that's dangerous, I know) that some of us have real obscure login names/nicknames. Some of them are explained on the author's web sites (Enjay), others (like Ty's) are pretty much self-evident. But what is a Nanami or a Zell? Who would want to be a Little White Mouse? What or who was Chilvence? Why are Mittens Evil? C'mon guys, where and how did your login ids and nicknames (subtitles?) come from? There must be some interesting stories in this :).

For the record, although it is a no-brainer, my real name is Martin Charles Howe; the Crazy Cat because I'm crazy about cats (see the url in my profile if you really wanna know :) ) and crazy enough to have made a play-doom-as-a-cat PC. MEOW!!

Anyone else?

I was dubbed "Biff" by the captain of a softball team I played on once upon a time. When he saw how skinny I was in shorts and T-shirt, he made the name as a joke. Somehow it stuck and when my wife played on the team, she was referred to as "Mrs. Biff".

Wild Weasel is actually radar-jamming equipment mounted on the F-16D and the F4 Phantom. My dad suggested this name as I was joining a long-extinct Half-Life clan called "Idiots with Guns"...the webmaster was too lazy and we never had any real teamwork.

I "made up" Nanami by altering the Japanese name Sasami. But as it turns out, Nanami is a Japanese name as well.

I'm Russian, so the non-existant USSR is "cccp"; conveniently that's how it's spelled in Russian as well, and pronounced "SSSR". My real name is Alex and in Russian that's "leha".

I also had a CS clan, which was "cccp.[handle]" and we pwn3d all n00bs and 1337s and stuff, among other things....Back to reality, most places, (message boards and such) don't allow the dot, so I siwtched over to the underscore. And some gay places allow nothing but letters and numbers, so that's really gay...

OK! But what does "Biff" mean? I mean why should the word "Biff" mean "a skinny guy in shorts and T-shirt?" It is from some movie or comic book character? Do tell :D

I dunno if it refers to a specific character or not, but usually the name Biff is reserved for big, chunky, muscle bound meat head kind of guys. Not skinny guys in shorts and a T. Hence the joke mentioned in Biffs post.

Hmmm, wasn't the bully in Back to the Future called Biff?
Hey McFly! I thought I told you never to come in here! Hey I'm talking to you, McFly, you Irish bug.
