About editing an existing mod

Post by Asurmen »

Hello there ! I have a question about a mod from amv9k, an old mod for Heretic : Legions (viewtopic.php?t=31588). I made for myself a version of this mod, using the file provided by Hexereticdoom on the project topic (he kindly created this file to fix a bug). I added monsters from another mod by amv2k9 (war of the sidhe) and several "new" monsters I created myself, mixing other monsters abilities, altering them to make them unique. I'm no modder, just a tinkerer and that leads me to my question : shall I post my altered file in the "official" project subject, create another subject (while giving entire credits to amv9k) or simply keep it to myself ? The account of amv2k9 is apparently inactive, so I can't ask him any permission. Or maybe someone else could take back the idea of this mod to create something entirely new ?
The reason I want to share my file, well, is simply that I would have loved to find such a mod elsewhere myself. After hours of research, I sure did find several other mods, but none that correspond exactly to the basic vision of Legions: monsters that do not use new models, with new abilities but not too "crazy", and that are interesting to face. Something simple and effective.

Check the project's LICENSE.

If it requires you to ask for permission, which you can't I say go for it. If you can't ask for permission, at least ask for forgiveness.

That is neither legally sound advice nor in line with the rules of ZDoom Forums. Please do not suggest intentionally circumventing a licence again. Thank you.

Further, if no licence is present, which appears to be the case here, you may not use the owner's work (assets, code, etc) without explicit permission from the owner to do so.

Legally, no license means that no one except you has any right to modify it and such. When the project starts to include multiple people, that you starts to include you as well. In other words, All Rights Reserved.

(Do not take this as legal advice, I'm not a lawyer/attorney/defendant/whatever)

That being said, no one is stopping you from keeping it to yourself. It's not like the FBI is looking for a random internet stranger that modified a local copy of a copyrighted work, they have much better things to do.

Indeed, if you don't distribute the modifications, no harm no foul, but that's an extreme deviation from the original question and the answer and only minimally related, not to mention irrelevant, to the topic at hand.
