When you bought the Classic Doom games on any digital store?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

When you bought the Classic Doom games on any digital store?

Post by cs89 »

Not just to look like a bad guy who does a serious mistake in this forum site every year I would like to ask something about which some members of the ZDoom community are concerned certainly.
My question is: Which online store did you buy the classic Doom 1-2 games from?

I bought the Doom Classic Pack on 2017's fall and I play all the Classic Doom games every year.
Then I bought Doom 3 BFG Edtiion on GoG and I can say that version of Doom 3 is more likeable for me because I don't have to switch to the flashlight.
Before that I also purchased the Doom 3 Pack just because I would like to play some mods on it.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think I had bought any electronic download versions of any of the games until I got Strife VE (from GOG). Prior to that, they were all physical copies bought from a store or my original mail order registered Doom floppies direct from id.

Yes, why not. If you had a physical copy of Doom 1 and 2, it still counts.
Also it counts if someone bought the newly released iOS and Android version of the classic Doom games, although I think playing the first 2 Doom games without a bluetooth gamepad isn't comfortable.

i got the BFG Edition when it was on sale purely to get the NERVE WAD that it contained. i don't actually use the IWADs from that pack, though: i've been using the same IWADs that i pulled from my copy of the Doom Collector's Edition, which i got maybe 15 years ago, possibly longer than that. i did buy the Raven pack online though, because while i had the fortune of finding a big box copy of Heretic, i did not own Hexen physically. i also bought Strife VE because i don't physically own that game either.

I also got Doom 3 BFG on GoG purely for NERVE.WAD, though I use that with an original copy of DOOM2 I bought in 1996.

(I don't believe in Doom3 nor its crippled classic Doom IWADs; for me they never happened and DOOM stopped with Final Doom. Can't speak for Strife, as it's like HeXen but worse - by design :p)

I got them all in a time when retail boxes were still the way to get games. I bought Hexen originally but sold it again in the late 90's, but later re-bought it along with Heretic from eBay. SVE is the only thing related to the Doom engine I got from a digital store.

I bought Strife: VE too on GoG. I tried that edition of Strife and it's a big help for me that the game shows the current mission's objective and it's relative place.
I have seen Katamori's walkthrough series about Strife and I got interest to that complex Doom Engine game. :D

I bought the Collectors Edition box back in like 1999/2000 and still have it. I also bought the "Doom Classic Complete" on Steam a year or so ago, and recently the other stuff like Hexen, Heretic, etc. Overall I think the Doom collection is cheaper than most of the other storefronts and goes on sale more often. For all the complaints about it, Steam has a fairly good track record as a stable digital licensing platform and the IWADs don't have any DRM on them, so it'll be fairly easy to reacquire my IWADs from the digital store if I ever lose my physical CD or backups, without having to resort to sketchy russian piracy sites.

I got my Doom IWads from the Doom Collectors Edition which I got from Walmart sometime in the Early 2000's. I have had the the Heretic and HeXen Iwads including the expansions for a very long time but I have no idea where I got them. I bought Doom 2 on Xbox 360 when it first came out for the then all new No Rest For The Living. I copied the game to a flashdrive and used a Hex Editor to extract the maps and created an autoload wad to run with Doom 2 in ZDoom on PC.

I had FreeDOOM for a while before I actually bought the id Software .WADs. I bought the DooM Classic Complete bundle on Steam on November 23, 2017.

Honestly, I should have done it long before that.
