Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Rather than continue a tirade, I'll be taking a hiatus. Clearly something is off if I'm feeling like I should be walking away from a place I think of as home. See you when I get back, whenever that is.

I've never seen anyone argue against error-handling before...
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
I'm sure we'll understand with a bit of explanation.
The way I see it, such a hackfix could negatively impact a speedrunning community especially if it warps to a level, though using it is up to the rules.
And on a principle of development, dirty hacks are of course bad, but depending on how easy it is to plug crashes individually and how often it happens otherwise, there's a lot of ground to cover in order to understand how bad it really is.

This, uh, doesn't make any sense.DoomRater wrote:It's a deliberate situation, but the problem is the way it's promoted, other people will look at this and think "gee golly willikers, that's a great idea! I'm gonna do that from now on with everything!"
I for one do not want the practice to spread any more than it already does in business software, where such practices cause real harm and can be tough to fix at the same time when something DOES go wrong.
A crash handler is always better than a program damaging or destroying your data and/or hardware.
In fact, on any computer OS, if a program crashes, there'll always be the OS' built-in crash handler to prevent the program from damaging things. Even drivers and the OS itself have a crash handler. (As an obvious example, the BSOD on Windows is part of Windows' driver/OS crash handler)
The only explanation that I can think of is that you're not a programmer. :\
(Also, what you're describing in the second line of that quote sounds like a program without a crash handler or with a very, very badly coded one.)
Spoiler:
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
What's even weirder is that he's complaining about a crash handler in a 20+ year old game. :s

Oh hey its GameHut! This dude was also in the involvement of the Mickey Mania game for the Genesis, and added some pretty impressive stuff in that game
Like for example, since the game is region locked, when you put an US version into a JP Megadrive, the game will tell you that this is not the correct region for the game, like every genesis game back in that time.
BUT, if you change the Region through an emulator from JP to US the game will say: "Oh... This machine has somehow become an ntsc mega drive system" This is something impossible to do on a normal genesis of course

But there's a very real risk that modern cartridge-based game publishers will use the same trick to avoid fixing real bugs when they make cartridges for the next generation of cartridge-based console games!Mikk- wrote:What's even weirder is that he's complaining about a crash handler in a 20+ year old game. :s

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
So the game industry will do exactly what it's been doing for a while? (publishing buggy games)
And why would that only apply to cartridge-based games? It's not like those are the only games that can do crash handling.

Sarcasm escapes some people.

I wasn't sure whether he was being sarcastic or not.
Because, y'know, this discussion started because someone seems to actually think something like that for some reason.

And rightfully so. You can't just assume that when you're sarcastic everyone can read your mind and know you're being sarcastic. It's ambiguous, especially in text where inflections are not carried out.Trance wrote:Sarcasm escapes some people.

Deadpan delivery is a thing I personally like, though.

Well, now I can't tell if you like it or if you're being sarcastic.Gez wrote:Deadpan delivery is a thing I personally like, though.

Was going to post stuff in WTF/funny/interesting videos/pictures but then I realized that the thread is locked

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
I didn't quite understand the locking of those few threads, the reasons given were that they overstayed their welcome/post count+, but there wasn't much elaboration on the former and I never really understood the problem with the latter. I mean I get if that if everything here was post count threads it would just be kinda silly, but it's not like people are getting pissed at each other in them, they just kinda exist, is that so much of a crime? Not quite sure what about them makes them lockable problems.ibm5155 wrote:Was going to post stuff in WTF/funny/interesting videos/pictures but then I realized that the thread is locked
Hopefully this didn't come off in any negative way, just wondering as I kinda liked the Explain Your Avatar one.
