I started out mapping for Half-Life... a considerably more complex engine than Doom's. After about 2 years (I started mapping when I was 11!!) I went on to Doom, and then ZDoom.

I did get pretty good at mapping for HL, but I have yet to get quite that good with Doom.

In short, it takes a while to get good at mapping. I understood HL mapping within two days (), and it took less time with Doom. But I had my brother teach me the basics... so that was an advantage...

But with Doom mapping, I learned myself. And it took about eight hours at the computer with a shite editor (DoomEd 4.2) to learn. The bloody thing also didn't have a manual.

KEYWORDS: didn't have a manual

.... you can learn just by messing around with an editor. Come on, try it. It does wonders. :)

i've used Doom Builder and tinkered with it for a while.
Any tutorials? That would make my life a boatload easier.

Code: Select all

Name: Mista T.
Real name: Matt Tropiano
Age: 19, approaching 20.
Location: New Jersey
Site: None really.

IWADs: All except Strife. Need Strife. Can't believe I don't have it.
Prefered: Doom2/Hexen.

Port/Game: ZDoom until the day I die.
Map Editor: WadAuthor now, DeeP back in the day.
Resource Editor: NWTPRO. Yeah, I'm oldschool.
Script/Lump Editor: Notepad.

Script Writing: Very Good.
Art: Altering color/palette conversion is the highest I go, anything better takes more time.
Story writing skill: Okay.
Programming skill: Pretty damn good, getting better.
Music skill: Never attempted.
Mapping: Between Good and Very Good, although I find it hard to get inspired nowadays.

WADs Produced: "Dimensions of Time" 6 years ago. Trust me, I've improved a hell of a lot.
WADs in Progress: A Hexen hub with ZDoom features, with some homegrown voice-acting. It's gonna be sweet.

Detail Obsession: Moderate. I still manage to make things looking nice and semi-atmospheric when needed, but I'm not too gung-ho about it.
Bug obsession: OCD-like. I make some sectors, test map. New polyobject, test map. New scripts, test map... you get the idea.
Ugh. I hate tooting my own horn....

There's no reason for anyone to not have strife if they want it now that it is no longer being sold. You can download it at the-underdogs.org.

That version is shareware, I believe. Back in the day when "abandonware" was a debated-upon term, I got the full version, then I lost it in a hard drive reformat (forgot to back it up. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID). Now some shady CD-ROM software dealer has the rights to sell it, I think, making it non-abandonware, though I could be wrong. Still, that's definitely the shareware version that The Underdogs have.

If only somebody had the full version and was generous enough to *COUGH*sendittomesomehow*COUGH*....

I suppose it could be, but it weighs in at 54.2MB and the ENDOOM screen says "Thanks for your purchase of STRIFE"... so I have no reason to believe otherwise.

It's definitely the full version icluding voices.wad. I downloaded it, too, after trying to get this game without success for half a year now.

Right now I am *very* busy dissecting the EXE to pieces. Let's see how much I can find out... I hope I get far enough to create a playable game. :)
