wouldn't *any* reasonable wad editor let you do that? why would any editor *not* allow that...

Because they try to be smarter than you are and assume they know what you want to do? "Oh, a 32-bit PNG! It's an image, so that means the user will want to convert it to the sprite format! Let's do this automatically! Man, none of these colors are even remotely close to being somewhere in the palette, silly user! Let's rape the colors horribly to teach him to better choose his images next time!"

SLADE doesn't presume to know what you're trying to do. If you tell it to import a file, it packs that file in the archive. Nothing more, nothing less. If you want it to be converted to a different format, you've gotta tell it to do so explicitly. I prefer this, honestly, it seems a much saner approach; but I suppose some people might miss the shortcuts.

can be a good thing, but very rarely.. XWE has a habit of creating over 100 Bak files.

Get bak, get bak, get bak to where you once belonged... ♫

For the unicode challenged, that's a musical note.

Yes XWE baks as much as it can until your C:\ starts crying with no megas left... and it punishes you if you open your wad file with anything else if its using it, by exploding your wad and removing all graphics, corrupting sounds, your maps turn into a spider web (look at them in doom builder and you'll see all lines stuck in each other)................... all that and I still use it to edit DECORATE because I am lazy to import it, test it and re-import it :P.

There was that one error that turned my DECORATE lump into an image.

You know that you can just edit it directly in the editor, right? That's what I do, I don't bother with external files for code, only graphics and sound. (when I need to edit them in an external program of course, but most lump editors should have a text editor built right in)

Actually, that's exactly what he was saying he does.

Oh yes, I've had this happen many times. Though I remember it simply reading the DECORATE as an image, not converting it to an image.

XWE has crashed 7 times on me and Slade 3 crashed 6 times!
Only difference, I had XWE for 6 months and slade for 3 weeks.

So xwe is automatically better, right? Not considering that slade is a better product overall and that it's still a work in progress.
