Uh uh uh. They have to be all brown. Every single one of them, even the sky. It's the most important rule to making good maps..+:icytux:+. wrote:neither having all bright ones. like a map full of shawnsesselfortium wrote:Well, you can't exactly have a good map without all the textures being brown, you know...Captain Proof wrote:I like Torm's maps but I've noticed that alot of them use the darker colored texures.Lots of brown brick and rusted steel.(sheawn)

Evidently why Nuclear Sky wasn't very interesting... it didn't have enough brown, and instead bored us with the addition of washed out green...

Yeah, I have to agree, the palette was crap, I think we had this discussion whilst the wad was in progress? Ah well. I disagree about the brown though, for some reason brown actually does look good in Doom, it's very atmospheric, although it can get a bit like 'shit-encrusted' graphics if you overdo it

All of the maps were very well done,I guess I just like to mix it up.I think I was told back at doomworld not to do that cause it doesn't mesh very well. But sometimes you can make it look pretty good.Phobus wrote:Evidently why Nuclear Sky wasn't very interesting... it didn't have enough brown, and instead bored us with the addition of washed out green...
Aside from being frusterating Nuclear Sky was a good map.I still have'nt beaten Zpack though.I've been working on Insomnia and playing Titan which I have to say I like due to it's old school feel.

Ditto. That's one thing that made me hate simplicity. That and the boss battles screwing up.

Revenants are pretty simple to destroy. Fire, duck, fire with an SSG.Captain Proof wrote:I know one thing is it had to many damn revenants...I hate the overusage of revenants.

Re: Trying to finish ZPack
Well, my problems with the map were as follows:Cutmanmike wrote:I really liked nuclear sky. The heck is wrong with you people. The enemy count was a bit too high though if I remember correctly.
1) It was visually dull, largely due to the washed out palette, but also the mapping itself wasn't the sort of thing you'd expect from Torm on that level
2) It was largely not challenging, had enemy placements comprised mostly of "SSG groups" and everything you did was answered with a lot of monsters, so the map dragged on
3) It, like a fair few other maps in ZPack, felt too long for me without enough change over that time space
So in short, it was long, easy, predictable and boring.
Techinically however, it was profecient, and as a piece of architecture it was alright. So uninteresting is pretty much exactly how I'd sum it up.

With all the talk still of some maps mimicking Tormentors and everything, I've always wondered if my map (Fanboy) seemed that way or not. Come to think of it, it did use an awful lot of brown...
Though the impression of the maps seems to be divided based upon who can navigate using the main fan and who can't. Ah well, it was at least worth the try.

Your map, though definitely gimmicky, was very original IMO. The main fan did bug the heck out of me, thoughfarlowj wrote:With all the talk still of some maps mimicking Tormentors and everything, I've always wondered if my map (Fanboy) seemed that way or not. Re: Trying to finish ZPack
I think the only problem with farlowj's map is that it was too original for some of the community. People like me who revel in that sort of thing loved it, whilst others who are more pure in approach but still like ZDoom may find the gimmick to be nothing more than that at best. And of course those who struggle to use it wouldn't be too happy (I know I had problems with it on occaission).
Re: Trying to finish ZPack
I think the fan would have been much better off using a ThrustThingZ-type script rather than the gravity change (I'm actually quite tempted to make an edit of the map for proof of concept).
I really liked all the belts and pulleys in the starting room, though. A nice touch, and one of the more interesting maps in the set, surely.
