Damn, I really want to make a vast apocalyptic valley using this, can we expect a download soon?

Well, I know everyone's sick of screen shots but I can't resist...
Spoiler: guess
So, as you can see, we now have a spiffy new UI and some crude lighting. I say "crude" because, as you'll see if you look closely, the terrain doesn't cast shadows on lower terrain... still, the effect is pretty good, and it's easy to tweak the sun's position into something that looks halfway decent. I have the grid removed in this picture so you can see the effect better. Don't worry, real shadows will be added soon. Exporting the "lightmap" to wad format should be simple but it's not done yet either...

We also have a menu bar, file dialog boxes, and the normal gui program type of stuff, thanks to fltk, so this doesn't feel so much like some kind of weird tech demo thing anymore ;) Also, I've refactored all of the code into a more object-oriented design so hopefully it will be manageable as it grows. The body of main() is now only 2 lines long ;) Also dependence on a few libraries has been removed (glut, glui, glew).

TO DO:

export light map to wad
real shadows
texture manager
"diamond" grid (will be less jaggy)
?

Excellent, is the water transfer heights or translucent 3D floors, because that would look awesome!

This looks increasingly cool. However, the thread title and program name have forced me to dig out some old Sugarhill Gang vinyl. I'm not sure if that's a good thing. :?

that song had some ridiculous verses...
have you ever went over a friends house to eat
and the food just aint no good
i mean the macaroni's soggy the peas are mushed
and the chicken tastes like wood
so you try to play it off like you think you can
by sayin that youre full
and then your friend says momma he's just being polite
he aint finished uh uh that's bull
so your heart starts pumpin and you think of a lie
and you say that you already ate
and your friend says man there's plenty of food
so you pile some more on your plate
while the stinky foods steamin your mind starts to dreamin
of the moment that it's time to leave
and then you look at your plate and your chickens slowly rottin
into something that looks like cheese
oh so you say that's it i got to leave this place
i dont care what these people think
im just sittin here makin myself nauseous
with this ugly food that stinks
so you bust out the door while its still closed
still sick from the food you ate
and then you run to the store for quick relief
from a bottle of kaopectate
and then you call your friend two weeks later
to see how he has been
and he says i understand about the food
baby bubbah but we're still friends

Quick update just to say the project is alive and well. Here's a quick screenshot of the live auto-texturing stuff in action...

Image

Here's the thing that lets you browse for textures. It pops open when you click one of the "texture slots" (above, right). You can set the same texture to more than one of the texture slots at once by selecting more texture slots while the texture manager is open.

Dumb image macros are dumb. I know.

Ooh, nifty. The texture placement doesn't make it look terribly realistic (see the odd-looking squares of the grey stone textures) but I really can't wait to play around with this.

Did you end up integrating different-shaped grids?
