There are switches, but I think they work like in Doom 3, which was really neat now that I think about it and few other games have done that sort of thing.

Just like the E3 trailer, this feels like it's abandoned the "against the odds" atmosphere of Doom in favor of stressing what a badass you are (and spewing gore for the sake of gore). One marine versus the armies of Hell isn't so daunting if the marine can tear limbs off with his bare hands.

It really feels like they're trying too hard to appeal to the crowd that thinks "Brutal Doom is really Doom!!!!1!!!" I'm not sure I like the emphasis on executions too much.

Well, given that it was alpha, it might be better optimized for the release.
Did you have any graphical settings to play with? / If so, what settings were you using?
Nah there weren't any options in the alpha besides turning AA off which didn't help when I turned it off.
What about resolution? I also have a 960 and Im fearing it just wont cut it. I do plan to try though. Overclock to the point of almost burning my hardware and then using low res + Super low quality.

If everything fails. I'll just buy it for PS4 and curse every 15 seconds because I'll miss playing with a keyboard and a mouse.

I see quite some negativity about the executions. I think the brutal doom "inspiration" is undeniable. But I wonder how much of this negativity is driven by the hate towards what "brutal doom did to doom", rather than because of the feature itself.

I dont mind the executions, but as mentioned before in this thread, it reminds me of Serious Sam BFE, and indeed, they tend to get old after a while. Yet, I keep using them every now and then just for the fun of it. I dont think it's a core mechanic in the game without which the game will suffer. Yet, having it there doesnt make me lose any sleep. However...

What I do dislike of what I've seen about the trailers, is the piñata monsters. Execute them and they burst into a zillion pickups. It's rather ironic I dont like that, since my main Doom mod has that everywhere, but I have it that way because of the lack of custom maps with placed pickups, and the sheer amount of stuff in the mod, and because it was the only way to ensure the player would get what he needed to suvive the mod while trying to make it somewhat fair.

But that's exactly what brings me to the executions in doom 4: The piñata nature of the monsters makes me fear that's gonna be the only real way to gather resources due to a lack of regular static-placed items. I havent paid enough attention to the trailers, but I dont remember seeing any pickups anywhere other than the weapons. Where's the ammo?

I always thought the idea of having ammo and weapons scattered around in the middle of hell and whatnot to be a bit silly. But then again, killing an imp and getting a clip of bullets from it's belly it's even more ridiculous (or the imp's diet is).

Yeah you could change resolution...... ....i think....
But this is just the extremely limited Alpha we're talking about here. The Beta (when is it coming out?) and the final release would of course have a lot more options to play with (hopefully).

As far as pickups goes from what i remember from the trailers, there are some scattered around the maps but they're scarce. The idea is that you'll get the majority of your health, armour and ammo from killing enemies. What some people seem to forget in this thread is that you DON'T have to trigger an execution for them to drop stuff. Executions will drop more stuff but not significantly more.

Doom for today's pathetic gaming crowd.

Looks like there's some decent gameplay underneath the shit they're shoving in our eyes but heh. Wonder if this game can be played without execution. Still don't have a clue if the chainsaw is an actual, usable weapon or its some cutscene-only garbage.

And its another 80$ title. Bwahaha. Nope. Modern gaming.

It's strictly a cut-scene only pony, only being able to perform the instakill if you have enough ammo for the appropriate enemy.

The question was "what resolution were you playing at?" :v
There's a large difference between playing in 1024x640 and 1920x1080.

Edit: apparently 1080p

Sort of - they're also called "The Unwilling" which is a rather odd name for a zombie. Or more like a name for some heavy metal band.

Anyways, found a screen from Doomworld forums regarding the weapon modding system (large image alert):
Spoiler:
Very similar to TNO's weapon upgrading system, except that you gotta spend 'argent points' to buy those mods. The BFG is also like the LaserKraftwerk in that it gets six upgrades while the rest get only one or two.
Also note that the Gauss Cannon and Chainsaw are the only chainsaw-gripped weapons; everything else has a pistol grip including the BFG.

If you get the pistol by default, it makes sense that it's not in that menu- probably doesn't get (or need) any upgrades.

the pistol in Wolfenstein got upgrades, though. i doubt the pistol here would be in need of things like a silencer, though.
