is anyone else here using this? It's amazing but it seems to exclude the Windows taskbar at the bottom and also the mouse cursor. I was just curious if this was done intentionally or if it's just my computer being weird. I'm on Windows 8.1.

Probably just a limit of how it works. It doesn't touch them on Windows 7 either. You can probably change the taskbar and mouse cursor in the theming/customization part of the Windows control panel.

I've come to understand why Microsoft has decided that windows 10 will automatically install updates, but why, for fuck's sake, is there no system in place to tell it to update at a very specific time (say, 2am) and not, say, right in the middle of some important work for my university.

Or is there one tucked away deeply in the system settings? This "we'll pick a time to restart for you" thing is a massive thorn in the side. And yes, I am aware you can schedule a restart. Once. And then you have to reset it every time in the future

I don't know about the taskbar, but dimming doesn't affect the cursor because it's hardware rendered, as far as I recall. You can "fix" it through a registry change, but I remember having problems with Steam's ingame overlay when I did that.

Simply navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse

and set MouseTrails to -1.

It didn't wreck mine for me.
Running Sony Vegas 13 and turning it off fixed it.
Anyway: Another glitch was discovered (Yes, same game as the previously mentioned Out of Bounds glitch I had), but this time, one of my character's arms stretched, it was solved after the character is on the ground. Yeah, this is a bit more glitchier than Driv3r when retail on PC.
