Re: The WIP Thread
Or anyone worth a fuck as a programmer hates what a convoluted mess Doom (and source ports) is, especially with modern 'standards'.

Re: The WIP Thread
I'm sorry, but this elicits a laugh from me. Of the games I've played recently, it tends to be the Unreal Engine titles that have the worst performance issues and the least scalability options (at least at the front end; I've seen friends trying to run UE3 and UDK titles and having to edit INI files to disable graphical settings and wind up ruining the game completely in their efforts to get it to run better than 15 FPS). That in addition to the games becoming less moddable as time goes by (especially due to the way resources have to be "baked" into map files for purposes of memory management on console systems), and some games being especially stubborn when running on systems merely three years newer than the game.Saya-chan wrote:but at least I have good things to say about Unreal Engine, like just how absurdly optimized it is (as it has always been).

Re: The WIP Thread
I'll be honest here, reading the source code of any and all Doom ports available makes me nauseous (one of the reasons I gave up trying to add a custom pixel shader system to GZDoom). I have learned the hard way that software often praised for having excellent programming behind it is just full of the largest and grossest hacks ever imaginable.
But wait, there's more: there is no single engine that I find at least "passable" in terms of code quality! (This is entirely subjective, mind you, I've been told that I have completely nonsensical standards of quality. For example: I receive lots of hate for the uncountable times I mention just how much GNU software disgusts me)
And thanks ww for reminding me. I totally forgot about the... I'll call it "black sheep version" of the engine. No single UE3 game I've played ran perfectly fine, but somehow when it came to those fancy little UE4 tech demos... let's just say I'm surprised my VERY outdated hardware could deal with them smoothly. I wonder if I've been deceived, again... Oh well, I'm used to being disappointed by Epic now.
About modding, well, I don't really care about games that weren't designed with modding in mind and/or make modding a pain in the ass (this is why I restrict myself to only the first UT). I hope to see decently moddable games in the near future, otherwise I might have to make them myself... (I'm doing it either way :V)

My favorite part is the sky; the clouds (i guess?) look like they're made of some kind of twisted, screaming faces.

I'm much more reminded of Torm's Stronghold.

Maybe he could be included in such a type of project that is ongoing at the moment... maybe...Project Dark Fox wrote:I'm much more reminded of Torm's Stronghold.

Re: The WIP Thread
The images get less blurry, but they also make less sense. Or more sense, depending on whom you are:

Re: The WIP Thread
It's actually called the Impact Hammer.
It also looks like the Hand Held model, which those had even less polys than the pickup mode.
