I just read the article. The transcript of that 911 call was absolutely chilling.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
I just deleted the partition on my external drive. The one with all my photography, my backup of my previous windows installation, and all the install files for my oddball never-find-again programs. Not to mention all the stuff my wife had stored on it.
I'm gonna be up all night...

I read that as "all my pornography" and was like D:! for you. Then I re-read and was still pretty D:, so I feel you.

Not a full format I hope!
My dad said as long as you haven't done anything more with it, chances are pretty good you can recover it. He's used TestDisk with great results.

That's actually what I'm running right now, trying to hopefully get something useful out of it. I only deleted the partition and started installing windows over it by mistake, so hopefully not much was lost.

That's one of the two reasons I detached my old drive before installing. (The other being that the old drive was disk 0, and I wanted Windows specifically on drive C.)

Dammit. TestDisk didn't do shit. I'm trying some other random tools, but it looks like I'm gonna have to take it to a specialist if we want to get my wife's book back.

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
OK, all the other stuff was bad but now you're really in trouble losing that.Caligari_87 wrote:my wife's book
In the past I've had mixed results with file recovery programs. Sometimes they have worked well, other times they have found nothing and sometimes it's been somewhere in between. It just depends how you deleted the files, what you have done to the disk since deleting and luck as to where any over-writing happened.

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
I know exactly how you feel...all the backups of pretty much everything that I hadn't back from my external HDD that failed (luckily My Docs, all my Doom stuff were transfered), so music, programs, some pictures and photos, everything just went. All in one night. D:
I wish you luck getting some of it back~

Chilling to some Pet Shop Boys, couple of CD's came in the post this morning~
Thinking of what to plan on Minecraft, the server is down so I'm gonna go for some single player action!

@Cali, you could try this:
http://www.piriform.com/recuva
I don't know if it is any good but one of their other programs (CCleaner) is so this might be OK too.

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Deleting a partition doesn't clear the files off it does it? Surely there's a way to get back into there.
What was she writing it in? Some programs create temporary files in C:/whatever, you should scrounge around (they might be hidden though)

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
I actually deleted the partition, then quick-formatted a new one for NTFS for a windows install. I know the files are still there, but the only program so far that's been able to reliably see them is like; "do your scan, find your files, THEN UPGRADE TO RESTORE THEM!". I just about had an aneurysm when it did that.
I'll try that Piriform one, Enjay; I've already got their Defraggler and CCleaner, so hopefully it'll be up to the same snuff.

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
I have completely conquered the mage towers level in Thief. Got all the loot and only missed to pick one pocket.. which was probably because i took it after I blackjacked 'im. Anyway, it took nearly two hours to complete, I wandered around a lot until I figured where to go next, and the hidden expert treasure glasses almost eluded my keen eyes
A fun fact, I did 69 knockouts. I like that number... for.. some reason.. *cough*
Anyway. Life is going good and bad again. One moment I think I have the opportunity to get all that I want at the moment, then the next moment my dreams get crushed, but it's always leaving another shred of hope... and it just happens over and over again

That's a Thief Gold exclusive level, right? I really liked the additional Gold levels. I thought they all added something nice to the game. I particularly enjoyed the one set in a theatre/opera.Dancso wrote:I have completely conquered the mage towers level in Thief.
