Thats basically how I'm trying to connect. How are you configuring the LAN to get in or out. My LAN has its IP and my other `puters have their own IP's behind that. I just (at this point) want to connect to a nephiew on a dialup. I'm behind a LAN.My roommate and I are on a LAN

WHOA! WHOA! WHOA! LAN's???
You need to forward port 5029 through your router to the LAN computer that is going to serve as host. Your nephew will need to join your internet IP address, not the LAN IP address of the host. You'll need to find the internet (WAN) IP address via your router menu, or there's a web site http://whatismyip.com/
Yeah, what he said.Biff wrote:You need to forward port 5029 through your router to the LAN computer that is going to serve as host. OK...but the problem is that MY IP is like the generic 192.168.xxx.xxx thing(behind the router). I don't quite understand how to get them to my machine if they don't go to my router first.
Internet----------->Router-------------------->Me
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
the IP that the IP that
//whatismyip.com my router
shows assigns me

Traffic incoming to your LAN from the internet does go to your router first. You can either open up a DMZ through the router to your computer (not as recommended due to security concerns) or forward port 5029 through the router to your computer, to the 192.168... ip address. Then, when zdoom client traffic (your nephew's data) hits your internet IP address, it's forwarded to your hosting computer which will answer port 5029.
Your nephew must use the internet ip address on his command line, not your 198... address.
I don't know what you are saying about the xxx.xxx.xxx.......that you see at whatismyip.com. Are you saying it's all actually x letters rather than numbers, or are you saying that you do get a useful answer from that web site? It works for me, shows the ip address of my DSL modem. I can also see that in my router setup...have a Linksys and get into the menus via a web browser. It's in the general information or status information. The DHCP clients table, if that's how you're set up, will show the LAN ip address of each computer on the LAN.

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Sorry, I do get an IP from WHATISMYIP, IPCHICKEN, etc. I put the xxx.xxx.... thing for obvious reasons. Yea, I'm runnung a Micro$oft router (don't say a word...it was a gift). But yea, I get it now. Thank you. I'll give it a whirl. I was trying yesterday with 096 and was having all kinds of trouble. I'm gonna do the 094 with port 5029.
That port is the default for zdoom, you won't need to specify any port on the zdoom command line unless you want to force another port...which would have to be forwarded.
For deathmatch, I don't think there is anything wrong with zdoom version 96, not sure what the "keep track of coop weapons" issue was that Zippy mentioned.
Good luck.
Edit: For the sake of completeness I should mention that I've assumed you are not running any software firewall, seeing as you have a hardware firewall (the router). You will have to forward ports through any software firewall, or disable the software. If you are running the built-in Win XP firewall, you'll have to disable that or at least do the port forward thing.
It would be worthwhile for each of you to ping the other's computer to verify connectivity. If you can't ping each other, there is little chance that zdoom can connect. You probably know....from the command prompt, type Ping (ip address) and hit enter. You should see a return, a response time of under 100 ms is desireable. If your ping is over 200 ms, it's likely that you'll need to use -dup 2 or -dup 3 on the host command line to speed up the game.

Try playing coop in .96 with someone. Weird things happen when you get to new levels. You'll not have some weapons you had in the previous level... the status bar will tell you have some weapons but you don't. This gets even worse in Hexen with the inventory. Your items become seriously screwed up. I remember there was the little arrow saying I could scroll left more in my inventory, but I couldn't. And selecting and using quartz flasks was throwing flechettes instead, or something like that. I think the mana values might have been changing inbetween levels, too (or at least, resetting to 0 every level.) I've never had this not happen in any coop game of .96 that goes on for more than 1 map. So whenever the coop game is not going to be a single map, I use .63a.Biff wrote:For deathmatch, I don't think there is anything wrong with zdoom version 96, not sure what the "keep track of coop weapons" issue was that Zippy mentioned.
