What's the major difference between nearest neighbor mipmapping and linear mipmapping?

I'd like to point out that if you ever expect to use transparent textures, nearest neighbour is going to give you the least shit results from those options.

Which, you know, considering how many of them are used in Doom should at least be a consideration.

Generating good nearest neighbour mips on the fly is another matter entirely. But going with that is a good start.

Camaxide can you test other software rendered ports, like prboom+ and Doom Retro in 4K?

I will do some 4K vs 1080p compare shots later.
I will check what my GL_lightmode is set to - but I got my settings tweaked yesterday to look very much like Software - I will do a screenshot compare later with Gzdoom vs zdoom also.
I will test this weekend how it all runs when I get it back over to the 4K screen in the living-room - I currently sit on the monitors on the computer room :)

It seem I get more or less the same FPS when running 4K as if I run HD.. 400ish on normal high toll scenes.
I get a tiny bit of inputlag - which I guess is normal on a TV (think it has 21ms - then some from AVR) - both running in game mode :)

Grab screenshots at 4K. What did you test?

I've tested mostly my own master-wad as its what I'll need to run in 4K.
I had some problems with screenshots uploaded to imageshack etc. to turn out too dark - I'll try capturing some nice screens with brighter scenes :)

I made a bunch of images from a playthrough of the first chapter in my megawad. I tried to get in a bit of everything - some long distance views, som close, some combat and some more ambient. It is a total of 43 images, and they add up to just above 50mb (its 4K after all - and lowering the quality further would kind of make it pointless to load them up to show the quality Gzdoom provides at 4K). Enjoy :)
Spoiler:
PS: Best way to watch them is to download and watch them fullscreen - preferably at a 4K display =)

I just realized this post started out as 4K performance of zDoom - but I ended up posting 4K performance for gzDoom - but I guess this might be more interesting seeing that zDoom can't really handle 4K very well (or rather our hardware can't handle all the pixels for the software-way of rendering). :)
I can tell that gzDoom removes my restrictions both in the resolution field, and in the 'complex scene' cases.. both of which would halt zDoom to a below 60fps - while gzDoom always stay well above 200 FPs in my test. I'd say for my hardware gzDoom is about 10 times faster than the software render.

I tried to view the pictures but its just a resized image. Can you upload a few to dropbox or mediafire.com to share? I want to see the pictures in its raw form.

BTW your megawad looks great. You should post a preview in the projects forum.

Maybe you are thinking of that old ZDoomGL instead?

yeah, I read Gez's comment to that and did his settings - now I have the good 'old' look that I like in gzDoom and it looks and plays very well :)
It was simply me not knowing I could make the GL look pretty much like Software :)

Looking at the raw shots I noticed how good it looks on at 1080 p monitor. Its downscaling giving of an AA effect and the pixels are still sharp.

Great work and the FPS is awesome.

Now go load up something like Brutal Doom and see if your FPS still takes a dive at 4K! :D
