Agreed. There are far too many projects trying to remake Halo and Doom 3 weapons I just don't see any reason to play it when the real thing already exists.leileilol wrote:why not just play gears of war instead of a badly imitated fan recreation in something inferior? its not like it has any real innovation to replicate. This is why i'm glad Zdoom isn't available for PocketPCs, cell phones and PSPs.
Can you imagine the GHETTO OF BAD GAME REMAKES being 12x bigger from such port?

You do have a point there though but there is something you missed, some remakes aren't that bad, its just that you can't cope with themleileilol wrote:Can you imagine the GHETTO OF BAD GAME REMAKES being 12x bigger from such Port?

Re: GEARS OF WAR (ZDoom TC)
This, basically. I'd have no problems with such projects if they put a bit of elbow grease into adapting the graphics at least to fit in with the rest of the Doom world (ala that now-sadly-overused Doom 3 weapons pack for EDGE) - model rips have already needed a lot of manual editing to look good, but model rips from next-gen games shouldn't even be bothered with.Caz wrote:Agreed. "Wii 2"? Surely Nintendo is more creative than that.NiGHTMARE wrote:I think you mean current genKinsie wrote:but model rips from next-gen games shouldn't even be bothered with.. (Since the next generation will be the PS4, Wii 2, and whatever name the next XBox goes by).

Re: GEARS OF WAR (ZDoom TC)
Wow... lots of activity during the night. I've thought of something that would drastically help with the spriting (I myself HATE model ripped
WADs). Many of the creatures in GOW are so unique that searching for bases may in fact be a waste of time.
Since I'm actually a good drawer (been doin' it since I was 5), I can sketch out the outlines (clothing, guns, etc.) of each sprite set (or most of each set). Then, I'll scan 'em into my PC, add all of the basic detail in Paint, then use GIMP (when every sprite for the set is done) to take care of the shading.
I know that GOW is a next-gen game and rips would not only look lame, but they would not AT ALL fit in w/Doom. But if I were to use my strategy (and others are welcome to join in), GOW for Doom 2 (or Retro-GOW) would actually look pretty cool.
If you're not still sure about this, that's fine; I wasn't at first either
.
Just check in to the forum later today and I'll have some single-sprite examples done (I hope). Once again, I'll use brighter color schemes so that this version of GOW truly looks as if it were made for older games.
If you like what you see and you'd like to contribute, just post a reply! I'll need programmers to put my sprite sets into Doom 2. No monster replacements, please!

Typically Nintendo are pretty creative with their console names, but now they're catering to the casual market... a market which seems to prefer to go with what they already know rather than something new. A brand new name might alienate that market, which I highly doubt Nintendo wants (although some of the hardcore fans of earlier Nintendo consoles certainly doHotWax wrote:"Wii 2"? Re: GEARS OF WAR (ZDoom TC)
I agree with Weasel in that something in the "style" of Gears of War could be really cool. A direct TC? Ehhh, not so much.
I'd say, try doing something with a third person view. This could be a really unique mod idea, and I'm sure people would be okay with the fact that it would be "inspired by Gears of War", and not a watered down version of it.

Re: GEARS OF WAR (ZDoom TC)
Okay, I've started the sketches. So far, I've done the outline of a Locust Grenadier. However, the pose is somewhat idle, so I won't use the sprite in the final thing. The quality and style will be the same, though.
The sketch that looks really promising is Marcus Fenix (HUD view). It's a crisp, clean sketch that I'll color the way he was on that Comic Book cover (just a little lighter). Keep tuning in!
P.S: This doeesn't have much to do with my sketches, but... I was thinking there isn't really any need for a HUD. We could make the crosshairs look like the Crimson Omen (the gear with a skull). As you take damage, it turns red! Just a random thought.

Re: GEARS OF WAR (ZDoom TC)
For those getting all grumpy that Blade3327 is making a GoW TC and asking why, I'd say why not?
It's only a hobby and if that's what he wants to do, and if he has fun doing it, let him get on with it. And other people might want to play it too - perhaps out of curiosity, or because they may find the TC fun, or perhaps they want to see how well recreated the game was or 101 other reasons.
Too many TCs of other games? Nah, not if the people doing them are having fun. As long as 1 person wants to do it, and that person is going to enjoy the process, there is always going to be room for 1 more.
If someone doesn't want to play them, fine, but why try and lay down the law about what people should and should not be allowed to do? What made you the overseer of what people are allowed to do with the Doom engine?
Not your taste? Fine, step aside. What do you want people to do as an alternative instead and do you really expect the number of such projects to increase significantly if people were to stop making TCs based on other games?
People who say "but you can just play the original" are just missing the point. Several points actually. From what I've seen, other-game-based TCs are quite often not about trying to recreate a 100% faithful copy of the game in the Zdoom engine anyway.

I can't say I approve of this. It's irritating to come here and ask for help when you've quite obviously got nothing done; it reeks of "You Do All The Work, I'll Be Project Leader" syndrome. Blade has every right to make this, but he shouldn't expect us to help the way this thing is going.

Re: GEARS OF WAR (ZDoom TC)
All right, people. After about an hour slaving over the computer, I've decided that drawing and scanning isn't the way to go
. I feel I'd make a much more Doomish GOW TC if I just turned on MS Paint and let loose there.
Would it be better to get more rips, then recolor them or something? I'd really like to avoid doing this, but the picture in my head keeps telling me it's totally possible to make 2D pixelated GOW sprites that don't look like they came out of a Flash cartoon.
If you look at Page 21 of the Spriting Carnival thread, you'll see some D3-D2 monsters I made. Those actually turned out well, but it seems to me that GOW demands a lot more, in terms of style.
There is some stuff I can do, though. Graphics, screens, music... That sort of thing... Does anyone have tips for sprite designing? Besides drawing and scanning? I'd really like to make this TC, but some assistance or a few helpful pointers would come in handy...
You did all see the comic book cover, right? Creating 2D sprites with those brighter color schemes would look pretty good in Doom 2
. Are there any really good spriters on these forums that I can be directed to? Get some help from there?
P.S: "I told you so's" are not considered helpful
