Megawads with life-like/ realistic maps?
Megawads with life-like/ realistic maps?
I'm just not a fan of the more abstract level design you see in a lot of wads.
I'm looking for megawads that have more life-like map design, specifically maps that resemble actual places people would use like office buildings, hospitals, city streets, etc. Basically the level design you see in Duke Nukem 3D and Blood. Does anyone know of any good examples?

Commenting to get the star on this thread - I too am a fan of Duke 3D and Blood's realistic mapping style and would be interested to check out similarly-built Doom maps. :)

A personal favorite of mine is Revolution! by Thomas van der Velden (TVR!.wad); at least the first half of it takes place in more-or-less physically real settings.

Well, if you want something that makes your PC bleed with demanding performance, there's Comatose.
But The Ultimate Doom II by Gardevoir adds a lot of real-life structuring to Doom 2's standard levels too.

Ugh, that's one of those maps that went a bit too far - even on my system it dips to unacceptable frame rates - 20000 tree sprites will do that.GAA1992 wrote:Well, if you want something that makes your PC bleed with demanding performance, there's Comatose.
Regarding the question, yes, I want that too. The one thing I really liked about the Build games is that they all tried to get 2.5 D rendering a bit further than Doom's abstractness. Which made Quake 1 such a dull experience for me because it went straight back to the Doom formula of abstract places only defined by gameplay mechanics. Sadly realistic settings are far too rare in Doom mapping.
Off my hand the mod that impressed me most in this regard is Cold As Hell. It somehow managed to keep its look "Doomy" while having a setting that really could exist.

I remember the original pack that this improves upon was going for realism style: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=58096

You could try Ashes 2063 - it's the post-apocalypse, but it's all realistic locations, not the turbo-abstract style of most Doom maps.
The mod has a Sterilized Edition with just the maps in the downloads section, check it out if you want to play with original Doom monsters or a mod:

Extermination Day is extremely raw at points, but it has some great maps in the realism department. I think that MAP16 was a highlight?
Dark Universe part 1 creates a very convincing spaceship, in my opinion. It manages to feel scary without over-reliance on dark areas and jumpscares. I actually jumped at the spot sound of a zombieman at one point. I recommend that you play it on hurt me plenty, for the first map at least. On UV it just lacks an awesome buildup.

Chapter 3 of this excellent writeup covers this topic : https://www.doomworld.com/25years/the-r ... chapter03/

They're not megawads, but Didy's maps are more or less realistic in style and texturing. Monster Hunter Ltd. and Axiom are some you might want to try first.
Re: Megawads with life-like/ realistic maps?
Look no further than Lost Civilization. Also, Bloody Steel and, as kodi said, Monster Hunter Ltd are worth checking out.

Trinity College for Doom 1, made in '94. It has some realistic textures and is modeled after a college in British Cambridge.
EDIT: It's a single level, not a megawad.
For megawads I'd suggest Fragport (maps 1-20).

Haven't played it myself (yet), but Sacrament apparently has fairly realistic level designs.
